Alice Louise Kerl, 78, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her loving family and her beloved dog, Cody.
Alice was born on November 28, 1947, in Madison, Wisconsin, the daughter of Elmer and Gladys (Olson) Kahl. She experienced the loss of her mother and brother at a young age but found strength and joy growing up surrounded by many cousins and extended family. She attended Black Earth Elementary School and graduated from Wisconsin Heights High School.
On November 18, 1967, Alice married her high school sweetheart, Dennis “Gus” Kerl. Together they built a life centered on family, love, and laughter.
Alice held several jobs throughout her career, with one of her proudest chapters being her work during the early years of the Wisconsin Lottery. Later in life, when her grandchildren were born, she left the workforce to fully embrace her most cherished role, “Nana.” She devoted herself to caring for her grandchildren, creating memories filled with warmth, joy, and unconditional love.
Alice was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who found happiness in both life’s simple pleasures and special traditions. Earlier in life, she enjoyed fishing and camping with her family, creating lasting memories outdoors. After her years spent caring for her grandchildren, she again found joy in camping and traveling, especially spending winters in Florida, where she built many lasting friendships. At home, she enjoyed mowing the lawn, tending to her flower beds, bird watching, and savoring her favorite peanut butter sandwiches, a cup of coffee, and her love of Mexican food. Her greatest joy, however, was time spent with her grandchildren. She had a special gift for making people laugh and feel truly valued and loved.
Alice is survived by her children: Tonya (Jim) Tubbs, Tammy (Mark) Sander, and Tim (Jean) Kerl; her grandchildren, Natalie, Nicole, Garrett, Colton, Jacob, Abby, Emma, Alaina, Josh, and Zach; and her loyal companion, Cody.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis “Gus” Kerl; her parents, Elmer and Gladys Kahl; her sister, Diane Ranum; her brother, James Kahl; and her in-laws, Robert and Delores Kerl.
A private family memorial service will be held to celebrate Alice's life.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Agrace Hospice Care, Homestead Care Group, and caregivers Joan, Emma, Natalie, and Allison for their compassion, support, and companionship.
Alice’s love, laughter, and kindness will live in the hearts of all who knew her.
