Bernard "Dick" August Frey, age 96, passed away peacefully at University Hospital in Madison on Thursday, October 12, 2023. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was known for his work ethic and his tinkering on projects in his garage. He loved to hunt and fish.
He was born in Roxbury on May 13, 1927, to the late George and Anna (Lochner) Frey. After graduating from Sauk City High School in 1945, he served in the Navy and had basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Station near Chicago. He boarded the USS Rawlins and headed to the Philippines. He served until 1946. He returned to the US and went through the Panama Canal and was discharged at Norfolk, Virginia. After his military service, he owned and worked as a mechanic at Kinzler and Frey, later Frey Sales and Service with his sons in Prairie du Sac. He also sold and repaired boats and motors. He sold the business and retired in 1999.
Bernard was united in marriage to Delores "Lolly" Wipperfurth on February 6, 1952, at St Norbert Catholic Church in Roxbury. They made their home in Sauk City, WI for over 70 years. "Lolly" passed away almost exactly two years ago.
Dick enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren great-grandchildren and met his first great-great grandchild in May.
He is survived by his children: Bev (Keith) Foye, Jane Salava, Dennis (Renee) Frey, Rick (Laurie Wagman) Frey; grandchildren: Jessica (Brad) Duffrin, Jamie (Kurt) Caldwell, Michael (Brittney) Frey, Mathew Frey, Rhiana (Mike) Stowell, Andrew (Heather) Jaczynski, Amanda (Jason) Hutson; and great-grandchildren, Kailey, Dawson, Caitlyn, Blayze, Kash, Harper, Christopher, Xavier, Sadie, Kane, and Brewer, and great-great grandchild Bennett; sibling David (Judy) Frey and in-laws Carol Frey, Irene Frey, Rita Frey, and Billie Frey, Ray Wipperfurth, Helen (Ronald) Meinholz, Nancy Wipperfurth and Ann Wipperfurth.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Harold "Nick" (Phyllis), Matilda "Tootie" (Charlie) Schepp, Phillip, Howard, Roman, Ralph, James and George (Barbara) Frey; in-laws, Arthur, Robert (Mae), Sylvester (Arlene), Alvin, Jerome (Gloria), Joe, and Leo (Joan) Wipperfurth, and a sister-in-law Patricia (Don) Swingle; son-in-laws Steve Salava, Ross Marion, and great-grandson Rayce Raschka.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 19 at St. Aloysius Church, Sauk City, Wisconsin. Burial will follow the mass at the St. Aloysius Cemetery with military honors accorded by Lachmund-Cramer VFW Post 7694. There will be a celebration of life at the Dorf Haus in Roxbury following the burial.
