Bernice Helen Balfanz, age 88, died on Saturday, October 11, 2014. She was born in Honey Creek Township, January 17, 1926 to the late Gilbert and Margaret (VonBehren) Kuhnau. Upon graduating Prairie du Sac High School in 1944 she lived and worked in Madison before marrying Ervin E. Balfanz on June 30, 1945; he preceded her in death on July 5, 2009. She was a lifelong resident of the Honey Creek farm community, a farmwife, mother of 3 children, and member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Leland.
Bernice is survived by her 3 children, Connie (Thomas) Sprecher, James (Kathleen) Balfanz, and Dick (Mary) Balfanz; five grandchildren, Sarah (Dan) Lewison, John (Claudia) Sprecher, Jason (Michelle) Balfanz, Matthew (Colette) Balfanz and Rebekah (Andrew) Kaukl; eleven great-grandchildren, Elise and Caroline Lewison, Niels and Nele Sprecher, Tyler Maki and Alexa Balfanz, Anna and Jacob Balfanz, Austin, Adam, and Aidan Kaukl; other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 3 sisters, Florence Junge, Eunice
Schwab, Arlene Kuhnau; and a brother Gilbert Earl Kuhnau.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, October, 16, 2014 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Leland, with Pastor Erich Hartenberger officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be given in Bernice's name to St. John's Lutheran Church, Leland or Sauk Prairie Hospital.
While Alzheimer's in later years took her memories of us, our memories of her remain.
