Obituary

On Thursday, December 12, 2024, Bernice (Bernie) Edna Campbell (Thompson) loving wife and mother of five children, passed away at the age of 91. We lost her sooner than anticipated from mesothelioma cancer and a broken heart from her son Tim's passing a couple months earlier.

Bernie was born in Viroqua, Wisconsin on November 3, 1933, to Leonard and Edna Thompson. On August 24, 1952, she married Edward (Bud) Campbell in her parents' home. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage together. The story is she met Bud while walking home from swimming. He was driving a construction truck and gave her a ride home. The next month she married him; not a quick decision she recommended to her children or grandchildren. They lived in Sauk City throughout their entire marriage and Bernie passed peacefully in the first home they purchased together.

Bernie is survived by two of her five children Jeffery and Lisbeth (Daniel) Gibney of Mount Horeb, son-in-law, Lester (Les) Droscheid; her grandchildren Jess Wood (Jordan Marshall), Danielle (Teddy) Ibinger, Kyle Dorscheid, Andrew (Kristin) Dorscheid and a great grandson, Sam Dorscheid, born September 5, 2024. She recently expressed enjoying getting to know her first great grandchild through the many pictures and videos sent and what a joy it was to her.

She is also survived by one sister Jerri (Kenny) Kellicut, a sister-in-law Lois (Don) Thompson, a brother-in-law Kenneth (Joyce) Bolt, and numerous nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud (2008); her children Kenneth (1990), Susan Dorscheid (2023) and Timothy (2024); brothers Duane (Marion) Thompson, Don (Lois) Thompson; sisters Jean (Thorwald) Peterson, Janice (Odean) Skrede, Joyce (Ken) Bolt, brother and sister in laws and a niece, Lana.

Bernie's main purpose in life was being a wife and especially a mother. Although with the changing of the times in 1968, when her two oldest were teenagers, she went to work at Badger Army Ammunition Plant as a lab technician working the swing-shift; so, she could still manage staying very involved in being a mother. Later she was a line worker at Graber's/Spring's Window Fashions and retired from there. After retirement, she took care of children from families she knew; the Elsing boys were her favorite.

Bernie made quick decisions, taking charge and quickly getting things done. She said she had to because it was five children against one mom. She had and passed along a very strong work ethic. She was very direct in her shared thoughts and always believed everything she said was the truth. She had many talents and interests, some of which are: gardening, sewing, upholstering, cooking, baking, antique auctions/adventuring/refinishing, painting, designing and making jewelry and playing cards and dominos. She took very good care her home and yard. She was known for sharing flowers and bouquets from her many flower gardens. She was generous to her family and friends with her time and talents. She loved sitting on her deck, porch or sunroom and enjoying flowers and birds, drinking a cup of tea.

The family would like to thank the wonderful and caring staff of Agrace Hospice Care. Without them this journey would have been unendurable.

A Celebration of Life for Bernie will be held at a date to be announced later. The family is thinking sometime in the spring, as that was her favoring time of year.

In lieu of flowers or plants, please come and participate in celebrating her life and sharing the joy she brought to everyone.
