Obituary

Bonnie Rae Kalscheur, age 78, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on May 7, 1947, in Madison, Wisconsin, to the late Burnell and Lila (Gilbertson) Wood. Bonnie grew up in Madison and graduated from East High School in 1965 before beginning a career at Oscar Mayer, where she worked for 15 years. She later continued her commitment to serving others in the Sauk Prairie School District, preparing meals for generations of local children until retirement.

On May 10, 1980, Bonnie married the love of her life, Steve Kalscheur, in Madison. Together they built a warm and welcoming life, eventually settling in Roxbury, Wisconsin, where they spent the next 30 years creating memories and forming lifelong friendships.

Bonnie found joy in the simple pleasures that made life rich. She loved spending time at her camper at Merry Mac's Campground, where she could often be found visiting with friends and enjoying the outdoors. For many years she enjoyed bowling with her "Blue Geese" friends, where they attended many state tournaments. She was a proud supporter of the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers and Wisconsin Badgers. The Kalscheur Basement Bar was the place to be to cheer them on with enthusiasm season after season.

Bonnie is survived by her husband, Steve; her children, Tana Coates and Sean Kalscheur; her grandchildren, Travis (Kasha) Coates, Jacob (Kayla) Coates, Nicole (Ryan) Handy-Bass, Emily (Michael) Blum, and Jeffery (Ally) Blum; and her twelve great‑grandchildren, who brought her endless joy. She is further survived by her cousins—who were also her closest friends—and many other dear friends who enriched her life.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Todd Coates and Chad Kalscheur, her brother, Jim Wood, brother-in-law, Dennis Kalscheur, and lifelong friend Lillian Engelberger.

Bonnie's family would like to send gratitude to Sue Schroeder, Donna Spencer, Mary Jensen, and the hospice team that gave wonderful in-home care. And a very special thank you to Jerica Retrum. Without her our mom would not have been able to remain at home til the end.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at 11:30am at Hooverson Funeral Home, 251 Water St., Sauk City, WI 53583. A celebration of Bonnie's life will follow at the Dorf Haus. A visitation will be held starting at 9:00am until the time of service. Burial will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, at 12:00pm at Highland Memory Gardens, 3054 Co Rd BB, Madison, WI 53718.
