Prairie du Sac, WI - Bruce Alan Lauer, age 70, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, June 15, 2026. He was born on June 14, 1956, in Baraboo, WI, to Robert and Edna (Paap) Lauer.
Bruce graduated from Sauk Prairie High School in 1974, and his son Rob was born the following year. Bruce worked as a shipping manager at Mueller Sports Medicine for many years before finishing his career at Fiskars. He married his beloved wife Betty in 2005 and together they gardened, went hunting and fishing, raised pesky barn cats, and laughed a lot. He was a dedicated Wisconsin sports fan and never missed a Packers or Brewers game. His greatest passion was the outdoors, and he cherished any time spent in the woods or on the water.
Bruce delighted in joking with and teasing his friends and loved ones, but underlying that was gentle kindness and generosity. He maintained close relationships with his siblings and had many dear friends with whom he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a devoted and proud grandpa, attending choir concerts, birthday parties, and soccer games. His grandchildren have consumed their weight in “Grandpa’s bluegills”: caught, filleted, bagged, and reliably delivered.
In 2015, Bruce began his recovery journey and found a supportive community in AA. He remained committed to the program and people until the time of his death, serving as secretary of his local group. We can’t know how many people Bruce helped through his participation, but we know how much the community helped him. On top of all of this he also stopped smoking, which he described as "1,000 times harder than not drinking!". These achievements made his family incredibly proud and we are grateful to Betty for supporting him through those challenges.
Bruce is survived by his wife Betty; son Rob (Chloe) Lauer; two grandchildren Josie and Kerry; siblings Sheila (Roland) Froese and Bryce (Nadine) Lauer; his mother-in-law Shirley Breunig; his sister-in-law Theresa (Ted) Hetzel; and several nephews and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Edna, his aunt Florence and uncle Omer Thorpe, and his father-in-law Paul Breunig.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 24 at 1:00 p.m. until the time of a short memorial service at 2:30 p.m. at Hooverson Funeral Home (251 Water St, Sauk City). In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to Ducks Unlimited.
