Obituary

Clifford Merton Schweppe passed into eternity 28 days short of his 100th birthday on Dec. 15, 2020.  He was born the son of Edwin W. and Iva L. (Luck) Schweppe, born in the Schweppe homestead's cabin in Troy Township on Jan. 12, 1921.

He married his roller-skating partner, Leah M. (Fish) in February of 1951. They celebrated 64 years of marriage.  Clifford lived his entire life in the Sauk Prairie area, surrounded by many friends and relatives. His family's farm was one of many that were displaced by the Badger Ordinance in the 1930's. From that time the family lived on various farms in Denzer, Spring Green and finally in 1944 made his last move to the farm in West Point Township.

He attended the local schools and left high school early due to his Father's farming accident. Later in life he earned his GED and continued his education at Madison College earning an associate degree in Sheep Management.

He farmed the majority of his life but also took seasonal work at Badger Ordinance and McFarland Manufacturing Co. Near retirement he worked full time at the Dairy Research Forage Center. Here he was able to work some of his family's lost land.

He was a man of many talents. Besides farming he enjoyed carpentry. He refurbished and added an addition on to a house for his Mother to live in. He also built an inboard motor boat and took relatives for rides on Lake Wisconsin. He and his wife Leah were members of the Tri-County Squares and enjoyed many fun times with Dale and Lenore Ryan, traveling across the state to various dance venues. After retirement he and Leah bought a motor home and traveled the country, spending a couple of winters in southern Texas.

Cliff enjoyed people, loved a good joke and polka music. He knew a lot of local history and when driven around the area could relate where farms had been and the people who had lived there. Even after he was unable to walk he would ride his Rascal around the neighborhood to visit neighbors and view crops.

He is survived by his sister, Shirley (Lawrence) Rens; daughters, April (Larry) Sawyer and Cheryl (Randy) Wruck; grandchildren: Joanna (Andy) Jones, Nathan Sawyer, Miranda (John) Jager, Phillip (Jessica) Wruck, Bethany (Christopher) Hultgren, and Sarah Wruck; great grandchildren; Jacob, Julia, Lillian and Ethan Jones, Ryan and Sean Jager, James, Jack, Penelope and Peter Wruck; nieces and nephew, Shelly (Terry) Hamlin, Bradley (Elaine) Rens and Jamie (Don) McMahon.  A special friend and neighbor Bob and Rhonda Krenz.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Leah; granddaughter, Abigail Wruck and nephew Marshall Rens.

His last 2 years he was a resident at Maplewood of Sauk Prairie where he enjoyed the activities and residents he met.  Clifford's family would like to thank the entire Maplewood nursing staff, Agrace Hospice Care, and Dr. Steve Johnson for all the care given to Cliff in his latter years.

A private burial will be scheduled at a later date.
