Cynthia G. Shanks, age 74, passed away unexpectedly at her home in Merrimac on Mar. 15, 2018.
She was born in Chicago, Ill on Apr. 11, 1943 to the late William M. and Evelyn E. (Sulski) Zielinski.
She attended Immaculate Conception Grammer School and graduated from St. Peter & Paul in 1961.
Following graduation she worked in the clerical department at the John Hancock Building in downtown Chicago.
While at her parent's cabin on the shores of Lake Wisconsin, she met the love of her life Alan B. Shanks.
They were united in marriage on Sept. 20, 1968 and would have celebrated 50 years of marriage this fall.
Cindy enjoyed raising her family at home in Merrimac and later went to work at the Sauk Co. Sheriff's Dept.
Cindy served as Jail Matron and as a Clerical Assistant in the Detective Division.
She and her family later operated the Shank's Shanty Ice Cream Stand at the Merrimac Ferry for many years until Cindy went to work for Devil's Head and the Petro in Portage where she enjoyed food service prep and sharing her love of cooking.
Cindy and Al enjoyed being involved in their community and were always available to lend a hand; Cindy was member of the Merrimac Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary.
She had a love for her family especially her grandsons, and traveling and camping with Al. Cindy was known for her manicured lawn, tending to her flowers and her Olympic sized vegetable garden in which she loved to can every vegetable in it and share with others.
She is survived by her husband, Al; three children, Karen Shanks of Merrimac, Shellie (John) Benish Jr. of Lodi, William A Shanks of Merrimac; 3 grandchildren, Tyler Shanks, Kyle and John III "JJ" Benish; her faithful dogs, Poppy and grand dog Buddy, a brother, David (Teresa) Allen of AZ; an especially close cousin, Linda Koitch; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Mar. 20, 2018 at Merrimac United Methodist Church, 25 Church St., Merrimac.
A visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 am until the time of service. Interment will be held in the Merrimac Oak Hill Cemetery.
A memorial will be established in Cindy's name at a later date.
