Obituary
Della (Grass) Edge, 92, died unexpectedly at her home in Sauk City, Wisconsin on February 8, 2015.
Della was born on July 22, 1923, the youngest of eight children born to Swiss and German parents in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin, on the Grass family farm, where she was raised. Her Swiss ancestors settled in the Prairie Du Sac area in the late 1840s, and by marriage became related to many other families of the region.
In her early married years, Della traveled with her husband, Harvey Edge (and young daughter, Sally) across the country from the East Coast to the West Coast, staying and living in many places. After the birth of their son, Michael, they settled in Wisconsin.
Della loved to cook. Her meals were always delicious. She and Harvey owned two restaurants, one in Black Earth, and a later one in Sauk City, where she was both cook and waitress. She read recipe books as though they were novels, but later in life said she couldn't do that so much anymore because it made her "too hungry." She was also an avid reader of novels. A great seamstress, she made many lovely pieces of clothing for her family over the decades. In later life, she spent a number of years "feeding the birds," hanging suet and bird feeders for the winter birds, cardinals especially, until she was unable to do so any longer.
Della is survived by her children, Sally (John Cowart) Edge (El Cajon, California) and Michael Edge (Mountain View, Hawaii): grandson Brett Meltz (Spring Valley, California); a cousin, Lilah Sprecher; nieces Karen Richolson, Eileen Bolgrin, Donna Pickarts, Dorothy Pugh; nephew Vernon Racek (Alice Hawley); grandnephew, Adam Richolson; and many other nieces, nephews and family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harvey Edge; parents, Christian and Helen (Wilhelm) Grass; brothers, Herman(Hazel Drescher) Grass, Oscar (Hazel Dunse) Grass; sisters Lorena (Ludwig) Racek, Anna (Ralph) Ambler, Mae (Gus) Piasecke, Marcella (Howard) Drescher and Arline (Edwin) Frommung; as well as cousins, nieces, nephews and family; and her most beloved pet, Jinx, a Chihuahua.
A private service will be held at a later date.
