Doris (Dodge) Berndt, age 90, passed away in Prairie du Sac, WI on July 18, 2008. She was born on December 16, 1917, to Thane (Jimmy) and Lisle (Sisson) Dodge in their downtown apartment above the Dodge's Confectionery in Prairie du Sac. The family later moved to Madison where Doris graduated from West High School in the Class of 1935. Doris and her sister, Shirlee, performed as an acrobatic dance duo known as The Dodge Sisters in vaudeville theatre shows throughout Wisconsin in the 1920s. She enjoyed rhythm and dance her entire life. In 1943 Doris traveled by train to Gulfport, Mississippi where on February 22 she married Army Air Corps Pvt. Fritz Berndt who was stationed at Keesler Field. In 1953 they moved to Prairie du Sac where Fritz started the Sauk Prairie Ice Cream Company. After raising her children, Doris began work as the secretary for the Spruce Street Elementary School in Sauk City, WI. After here retirement in 1983, Doris and her husband enjoyed traveling and spending time with their family. One of her greatest joys in later years was watching her grandchildren develop into young adults.
Doris is survived by a son, Jack, of Madison, WI and a daughter, Debra, and her husband, Richard Collins, of Beaver Dam, WI. She is further survived by three grandchildren: Emily (Ben) Brukman of Milwaukee, Ben Collins of Tempe, Arizona, and Lindsay Collins of Madison, WI, as well as two great-grandchildren: Luke and Norah Brukman. Additional survivors are sisters-in-law Myrtle Koeller and Dorothy Berndt of Shawano, WI.
Doris was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Fritz, in 2001; her daughter, Patty, in 1961; and her sister, Shirlee Dodge, in 2008.
The family wishes to thank Sauk County Home Health Care, Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital, and Maplewood Nursing Home for their recent assistance. Special thanks go to Dr. John Koch for his continued compassionate care of Doris over the years. There will be a private family service with in internment in the Prairie du Sac Cemetery. Memorial monies will be donated to an animal shelter organization.
