Dorothy Kundert, age 95, died peacefully in her sleep early Friday morning November 24 at Sauk Prairie Healthcare. Dorothy was born June 10th 1928, in rural Stoughton Wis. to Aksel and Hilma (Olson) Johnson. Dorothy attended the one room Odland Schoolhouse near the farm where she grew up. She graduated from Stoughton High School in 1946, and from Madison General Hospital as a Registered Nurse in 1949. She was baptized, confirmed and married at First Lutheran Church also in Stoughton.
On September 24th 1949 Dorothy married her High School sweetheart, Duane Kundert, and was parted from him by death after 64 years of happy marriage.
Together they had 4 girls, Julie Ann, Kristine Sue, Evonne Marie, and Karen Lea. They made their home in Sauk City, joining Duane's parents at Kundert's Department Store and members of First United Church of Christ. In 1955 Dorothy was one of the first R.N's hired at the newly built Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital. For nearly 40 years of doing what she loved and came naturally, she was active in all patient care departments. She introduced the Candy Striper Program for Highschool students interested in the medical field. She created the pre-op education program for all people before surgery. She retired from Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital as the night nurse manager, to help her husband at the Madison KOA Campground. Where they built, owned, worked hard and lived during the summers, for many years, till they officially retired in 2006. Even after retirement Dorothy's love of nursing did not stop. She helped out at the Good Neighbor Free Clinic in Sauk Prairie. The winters were spent at the Club Naples RV Resort, Naples Florida, where she was the occasional on site nurse. They were active charter members of Mayflower Congregational Church of Christ.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Julie and Evonne, sons- in- law, George Perry and Robert Krumenauer; grandchildren, Kevin (special friend Denise Fleegel), Scott (Brenda), and Craig (Pam) Perry, Daniel (fiancée, Alexis) Krumenauer, Kara (Ryan) Meissen, Ty ( Peggy) and Eric (Mike Jaccard) Stebbins, Ashlea and Steven Thistle; 14 great grandchildren, Zakary Perry, Kerstin (Nick) Sarac, Austin (fiancée, Danielle) and Logan Perry, Andrew and Martin Perry, Savi and Kalil Krumenauer, Croix and Claire Miessen, Henry, Whitman, and Tilly Stebbins, and Tristan Thistle; 5 great-great grandchildren,. Brooklyn and Brantley Sarac, Greyson Perry and 2 step great-great grandson, Brooks and Cashton, 2 more on the way.
Preceding Dorothy in death was her husband, H. Duane Kundert; her parents Hilma and Aksel Johnson; in-laws Ramona and Henry Kundert; daughters, Dr. Kristine Sue Krumenauer and Karen Lea Ammann; and great granddaughter Erika Perry.
Dorothy's family is so appreciative of the care and support she received from the many that called her Mom; Terry Grosskopf, Mark Kuechler, Paul Ammann, her First United Church of Christ family and all her community friends, and neighbors.
A Celebration of Her Life will be held at First United Church of Christ, 504 Washington St., Sauk City at 1:00 pm on December 9th, 2023. A visitation will be held from 11:30 am until the time of service. Live streamed at YouTube "First United Church of Christ, Sauk City".
