Obituary

Beloved as our mother, wife, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, Elizabeth "Bette" Jane Boss (nee Coyle) has been relieved of her earthly burdens and commended to God's eternal and loving care. On June 2, 2018 she passed peacefully to be joyfully welcomed by her son, Patrick Boss, her parents, Martin and Marie Coyle (nee Dunn), her sister, Mary Wunnicke (nee Coyle) her brother, Patrick Coyle, and her Irish immigrant grandparents, Elizabeth and Peter Dunn.

Born at home in Bear Creek, Sauk County, May 8, 1926, her Irish parents proudly welcomed their "wee lass" and first child. Bette spent her childhood on Loreto Ridge, attending country school with her "Irish twin" sister, Mary. She graduated Spring Green High School in 1944. As a part of the war effort, she worked at Badger Ordinance, then moved to Madison to work for Farmers Mutual.

It was in Madison where she cultivated two of her lifelong passions – dancing and meeting the love of her life, Rex Theodore Boss. Bette became a dance instructor at Arthur Murray Studios, where Rex and she caught each other's eyes. Rex filled Bette's dance card, they "tripped the light fantastic," and tied the knot on December 4, 1948. After that, life's adventures with 6 kids, 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren ensued. Bette and Rex partnered through life's joys and challenges for 69+ amazing years together.

The restaurant business ended up being Bette's third passion in life. With Rex as her partner, they owned Rex and Bette's Truck Stop from 1951-1965 in Spring Green. Together, they co-owned and operated the Fire House Supper Club in Prairie du Sac from 1969 to 1993. Bette was known as the "hostess with the mostest" by her friends, family, and loyal customers. In 1983, they were awarded "Restaurateur of the Year" by the Madison Chapter of the Wisconson Restaurant Association. After the sale of the Fire House, Bette continued to enjoy the world of hospitality by hostessing at the Lake Wisconsin Country Club. She also served St. Vincent de Paul for a number of years. Bette was a lifelong member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Spring Green and a longtime member and past president of the Sauk-Prairie Hospital Auxilary.

Bette is survived by her dance partner and love, Rex Boss; her children, Maureen (Mark) Polczynski, Mary (Russ) Reddemann, Peggy (Jerome Sprecher) Mockler, Mike (Nina) Boss , and Kitty (Dan Neumeier) Boss-Veerhusen. She was so very proud of all of her grandchildren, Shane Reddemann (Christina), Jason Hicks (Nicole), Bryce Reddemann (Jeanna Severn), Sara Hicks (Janna Cunningham), Elizabeth Reddemann, Cody Veerhusen (Stacy Kietzer), Michael Polczynski (Kaitlin Staudt), Sadie Boss (Justin Drane), Erin Veerhusen (Matthew Grange), Daniel (Alice) Boss, Kyle Mockler (Page Pielet), and Dylan Boss (Jennifer Nesbitt). It was her "little ones," her great grandchildren, who swept her off her feet, later in life. Sophie, Drew and Elena Hicks, Reese Reddemann, Jacob and Harper Cunningham, Damian Villa, Oliver and William Grange, and Breyson Mockler.

Bette's siblings, Kathleen Murphy (Edgerton), Sharon Murphy (Salt Lake City) and Colleen Walsh (Prairie du Sac), her sister-in-law, Sandra Coyle (Rothschild), along with her devoted nieces, nephews, and cousins will dearly miss her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on June 7, 2018 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 115 Madison St., Sauk City with Fr. Miguel Galvez officiating. A visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on June 6, 2018 at Hooverson Funeral Home, 251 Water St., Sauk City where a Rosary will be led by the Council of Catholic Women at 3:30 pm. Visitation will continue the morning of Mass at the funeral home from 9:30 am until 10:45 am. Burial will follow in the St. Aloysius Cemetery.

Deep gratitude is extended to the warm and knowledgeable caregivers at Greenway Manor (Spring Green), Pine Villa (Prairie du Sac), Maplewood (Sauk City) and Heartland Hospice.
