O. Richgels
October 11, 1920 – December 31, 2020
Elizabeth "Betty" O. Richgels, age 100, passed away Dec. 31, 2020 at Heartland Country Village Nursing Home in Black Earth. She was born at home in Black Earth Township on Oct. 11, 1920 to the late Wilfred and Coletta (Hawley) Lucey. Betty graduated in 1938 from the Mazomanie Union Free High School. She was united in marriage to LaVern Richgels on July 5, 1945; he preceded her in death on June 28, 1975. Betty worked for 20 years for the University Hospital and later the University of Wisconsin Library System until her retirement in Dec. 1985. She was a lifelong member of St. Barnabas Catholic Church, Mazomanie and the Council of Catholic Women, Black Earth Community Club, Black Earth Historical Society, Mazomanie American Legion Aux. Unit 437, Mazomanie Alumni Assoc., Golden Care of St. Mary's Madison and was a long time inspector for local elections.
She is survived by her daughters, Patricia (Dennis) Wood, Monica (Phil) Solchenberger, and Michelle (Don) Zwettler; 9 grandchildren, Sherina (Shawn) Jensen, Scott (Bethany) Wood, Debra Wood Brown (Jayson), Amy (Dan) Foster, Brian Solchenberger, Emily (Steve) Wickert, Amanda (Isaac) Stahlke and Ryan Zwettler (Josh Becker), Tony Atwood; eleven great grandchildren; her sister, Coletta Statz and sister in-law, Peg Lucey. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marcia and her brothers, Donald, Connie, Dean, and George Lucey; a sister, Dorothy Ring and an unnamed infant sister; sister in laws, Dorthea, Noreen and Pat Lucey and brother in-law, Raphael Statz.
A Private Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Sat. Jan. 9, 2021 at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Betty's family would like to express their sincerest appreciation to the caregivers at Heartland Country Village for their wonderful care.
