Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" Virginia (Cadmus) Ohnstad died Monday, June 23, 2008, at the age of 98. She was born August 7, 1909 in Newark, NJ, the daughter of the late Richard and Elizabeth Cadmus. She moved frequently throughout her childhood. Her family was one of the first settlers of Peace River, Alberta, Canada, where they lived in a log cabin and ran the first post office in the region. She married Luther Ohnstad on April 6, 1932, and they celebrated 48 years of marriage. They had four children: Virginia Gerber of Janesville, Richard (Arlene) Ohnstad of Sun City, AZ, Jane (Stephen) Field of Cross Plains, and Dennis Ohnstad of Urbana, IL. She had seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Betty and Luther settled in Mazomanie where they operated a Standard Oil Bulk Petroleum business for many years while owning and operating "Ohnstad's Grocery" store, a fixture in the Mazomanie community for many years. Betty was an active member of the United Church of Christ and the Women's Circle during those years. She handcrafted many beautiful quilts for the Circle's annual bazaar. She also made at least one quilt for each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren which they all treasure. After heart by-pass surgery in 1993, Betty moved to Urbana, IL, where she continued to enjoy her many hobbies which included sewing, crafts, quilting, gardening, word games, cooking and baking. She was fiercely independent, yet soft-spoken and easygoing. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and brothers, Richard Donald Cadmus. Funeral services will be held at the United Church of Christ, Mazomanie, at 11:00 a.m. on Sat., June 28, 2008 with Pastor Carolyn Kennedy officiating. Burial will follow in the Mazomanie Cemetery.
