IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Eugene "Gino"
K. Mowitz
September 5, 1932 – February 20, 2025
Eugene Kenneth (Gino) Mowitz, passed away peacefully at home on February 20, 2025, at the age of 92.
Gino was born on September 5, 1932, in Portage, WI to the late Arnold and Alice (Rhode) Mowitz. The oldest of 4 siblings, they moved to Prairie du Sac, WI where he attended Prairie du Sac High School, Class of 1950. He was a high school athlete and enjoyed playing basketball. Gino continued playing basketball at UW Platteville until he was drafted to serve in the army during the Korean War. While in Korea he served as Staff Sergeant in the 10th Field Artillery Battalion, Battery B from Feb 3, 1953 - Dec 7, 1954. When being oversees, he enjoyed taking leaves to spend time in Japan. Decades later, it was a big highlight and privilege for Gino to go on the Wisconsin Honor Flight to Washington DC.
Gino was married to Patricia Houle and welcomed 3 children together. He was a skilled craftsman and built many beautiful furniture pieces and cabinetry over the years. A good portion of his life was spent working with Wick Builders.
Gino was a regular golfer at Lake Wisconsin Country Club and enjoyed playing cards and hanging out with his family and friends. Gino was remarried to Jeanne Gelhaus and they relocated to Florida for several years.
Gino was remarkable for his age. In the most recent years, he lived with his daughter and her husband in the country. He would drive into town to exercise at the Wellspring wellness center, go to lunch at the Eagle Inn with his nephew and friends, then go to the library and check out three books to read for the week. In addition to being an avid reader, he was a crossword and puzzle fanatic doing at least 10 a day!
Gino was humble and would never brag about his talent. He was a very gifted artist. His hundreds of paintings were primarily of wildlife, and he was still painting into his nineties. The detail in his paintings were exceptional given he never had any formal training.
Gino was a wonderful man, cheerful, kind and fun to be around. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Gino is survived by his daughter, Kim (Don) Ward of Loganville, son, Craig (Oui) Mowitz of Thailand, grandson, Tyler and granddaughter, Gina; granddaughter, Danielle and grandson, Dane Mowitz; grandson, Nik Pickel (Tiffany Bristol), great-granddaughter, Kira Pickel; grandson, Jason (Michele) Ward, great-grandson, Gavin Ward; granddaughter, Tanya (Mike Tuescher) Ward; brother-in-law, Maurice (Jackie) Nolden; 5 step children: Steve Snyder, Deb Nusbaum, Kathy Brewer, Kari Stetzer, Shari Hillery and their families; along with many cherished nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Sheri Mowitz, wife Jeanne Gelhaus, sisters: Karen Nolden and Joan Preston, brother John Mowitz and partner Mary Moseman and brother-in-law Vern Preston.
Gino's family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the caregivers from Agrace Hospice of Baraboo, especially Kari, Katie and Desirae for their dedication, compassion and exceptional care.
