Our dear Florence passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, April 22, 2008. She was born in Arena on August 31, 1923. Florence was the eldest daughter of the late Roy and Mildred (Thudium) Schlough. She graduated from Dover Grade School and Arena High School and attended Wisconsin State College-Platteville. Florence was united in marriage to Kenneth L. Powers on July 14, 1943. Florence taught in the rural schools of Belmont, Coon Rock, Danz, Dover and Arena. She also worked as an assistant for Koch's Eye Clinic and was a member of the United Church of Christ in Sauk City. Florence was an active member of the Kid's Companions and Volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Sauk Prairie Optimist's. She enjoyed working on her word puzzles every morning, and enjoyed fishing, gardening and watching the birds. Florence enjoyed entertaining family, friends and guests-some from around the world. She was a living example of the ministry of hospitality and a most gracious hostess. All children held a special place in Florence's heart and she spent many hours reading to children and inspiring the love of books. Florence will be most remembered for her nurturing and maternal nature, being a grandmother and a mother to many. She had a special bond with her three sisters and beloved brothers assuming the role of family matriarch. Florence was a mentor to all in living a life of grace and integrity. Florence is survived by her son, Kenneth (Evelyn) Powers of Germantown and her daughter, Kathleen Powers of Sauk City; a grandson, Kenrick Powers of Whitewater; siblings, Albert (Betty) Schlough of Bradenton, FL, Phyllis Bryant of Dodgeville, Frank (Donna) Schlough of Mazomanie, Lois (Jerry) Marsh of Edwardsburg, MI
and Judy Forseth of Fort Myers, FL; sister-in-law, Marilyn Snyder of McGregor, IA and brother-in-law, Charles (Phyllis) Powers of Rockford, IL; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in June of 2007; a brother, RollieSchlough; special nephew, Frank Schlough Jr.; brothers-in-law, John and Melvin Powers; Harvey (Phyllis) Bryant; and sisters-in-law, Lucille (Edward) Cullen and Dorothy (Linus) Vosberg. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2008 at First United Church of Christ, Sauk City, with Pastor Bill Kapp officiating. Burial will be in the Arena Cemetery immediately following the service, with a luncheon in the church hall after the burial. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Home Health United Hospice, Dr. Varley, Pastor Bill Kapp and family and friends who assisted her in the final weeks of her passing, allowing her to remain in her home. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund will be established to plant trees and for the First United Church of Christ.
