Frances L. Mack, age 90, formerly of Poynette, died on Thursday, October 6, 2011, after a brief stay under Hospice care at Maplewood nursing home in Sauk City, Wisconsin. She was born in rural Wyocena, Columbia County, on April 21, 1921, to Melvin and Marion (Curtis) Pulver. She was married to Lyle Mack, at her parents home near Wyocena, on November 1, 1941.
Frances graduated from Portage High School in 1938, and Columbia County Normal College in 1940. She taught at Lowville Elementary School from 1940 through 1942 before joining Lyle near Fort Dix, New Jersey after he was drafted in the Army Air Corps. She returned to live with her parents in Wyocena when Lyle was stationed overseas in the Pacific Theater of World War II.
After the war Frances and Lyle moved to Dekorra township to raise their family. Frances returned to full time teaching in 1959 at Lincoln Elementary School, and subsequently at Poynette Elementary School. She retired from full time teaching in 1973, and retained a limited substitute teaching schedule. She also tutored several students privately for a number of years thereafter. Upon Lyle's retirement in 1979, Frances and he spent many years traveling throughout the United States. In 1994 they left their farmette in Dekorra and settled in Prairie du Sac.
Frances' joy was teaching. She was awarded a certificate of Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America in 1972, and was proud of the hundreds of her students who went on to become productive citizens.
Frances is survived by her four children, Larry (Joanne) of Kittitas, Washington, Michael (Dee) of Waunakee, Carol Baeseman of Madison, and Marcia Fleury of Prairie du Sac; seven grandchildren, Craig (Janet) Baeseman of Elroy, Clark (Melissa) Baeseman of Madison, Christopher Mack of Albany, New York, Trish (Troy) Vogel of Las Vegas, Nevada, Tomilyn and Tyler Fleury of Madison, and Michaela Mack of Waunakee; 10 great grandchildren, a sister Rhoda (Howard) Barden of Sauk City, and a brother Neil (Cecelia) Pulver of Wyocena.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lyle; brothers Garth, Glen, and Ralph; grandson Curtis Baeseman; and son-in-law Tom Fleury.
Funeral services will be held at the SAUK PRAIRIE COMMUNITY CENTER, 730 Monroe Street, Sauk City, at Noon on Wednesday, October 12, 2011. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Hooverson Funeral Home, Sauk City, and again on Wednesday just prior to the service. Burial services will be held at Hillside Cemetery in Poynette at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2011.
