George S. Carpenter, age 92, passed away at his home in Black Hawk, on Monday, February 5, 2018.
George was born January 5, 1926, in Barrington, Rhode Island. He was the son of Harry Lee and Anna (Pannone) Carpenter. He was united in marriage to Arline (Bills) Carpenter, December 30, 1944.
After high school, George signed up for the US Army Air Corps, April 11, 1944. He was stationed for training at Truax Field in Madison, where he met Arline, his future wife of 73 years. He then served in Europe during World War II. After living in Rhode Island for a few years after the war, the couple returned to the Sauk City area to start their family.
George is survived by his wife, Arline; six children, Peggy Maier, Roger (Deanna) Carpenter, Randy (Kathy) Carpenter, Gayle (Paul) Vosen, Amy Carpenter and Neal (Wendy) Carpenter; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 1 brother and 2 sisters of Rhode Island; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved canine friends, Gor "Norman", Atlas, and Snickers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, George, Jr.; sister, Mary Sherman; father and mother-in law, Orval "Pat" Bills and Agnes (Bartnick) Bills; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Orval "Billy" Bills, Marlene "Marty" Bills, Laverne Greiber, Harold Bills and Claudine Bills.
He will forever be remembered for his service to our country, his hard work and craftsmanship, his sharp, intelligent and creative mind, and his love of cars and airplanes.
The family extends a warm and heartfelt thanks to the first responders, EMTs, Sauk County Deputies, and Hooverson Funeral Home.
The family will have a Celebration of Life gathering at a later date.
