Gerald "Jerry" Robert Alt, age 85, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison.  He was born at home May 7, 1939, in Plain, WI, the second of twelve children to the late Leonard and Irene (Pronold) Alt.  He was united in marriage to Judith Peterson on July 28, 1960, who preceded him in death on Nov 24, 2000.  He later married Verna (Pape) Walsh who preceded him in death on Dec 3, 2014.

At age 17, Jerry joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in California and Hawaii.  Following his time in the Marine Corps, Jerry worked at Graber's, Kalscheur Construction, and Coca Cola.  In 1960 Jerry went to work for Wisconsin Brick & Block where he was employed for 34 years.

Jerry was an avid fisherman and hunter and loved cooking wild game.  He truly enjoyed watching the birds and other animals in his beautiful backyard.  He also enjoyed long rides in the country to see the wildlife.  He was an avid fan of NASCAR racing, the Milwaukee Brewers, and Green Bay Packers.  In early retirement, Jerry enjoyed making birdhouses and feeders and often gifted them to family members and friends.

He is survived by his three children, Steve Alt and his son, Nic (Sara) Henn; (great grandchildren, Eleanor and Mason Henn), Randene (Steve) Long and their children Carysa (Dylan) Cottrell (great granddaughter Waverly Cottrell) and Tara Long (Devin Mulvain) and Michael Alt; his dear friend and companion, Karla Kleist and her children Tina (Jeff) Hughbanks, Ted (Sue) Kleist and Don (Jodi) Kleist.

Jerry is further survived by his stepchildren, Randal Walsh, Dean (Joanne) Walsh, Keith (Wendy) Walsh, Brad (Jeanne) Walsh and Stacey Walsh, along with step grandchildren, Tiffany, Dustin, Natalie, Brittney, Camryn, Vincent, Morgan, Jaden and Jenna and step great grandchildren, Evelyn, Estelle, Cole, Caroline, Graham and Grayson.

Jerry is also survived by ten of his siblings, Marilyn Brickl, Bill (Marsha) Alt, Tom (Peggy) Alt, Judy (Carl) Hacker, Ron (Connie) Alt, Bobbi (Art) Beal, Karen Praksti, Kathy (Steve) Thimling, Shari (Al) VonBehren and Duane (Dawn) Alt, along with many other nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

In addition to his parents and spouses, he was preceded in death by a sister, Pat Pulvermacher and a step grandson, Sterling Walsh.

There will be a private family service and burial.  A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
