Dr. Haakon P. Carlson, age 85, passed peacefully at home on 8/12/22 surrounded by family. He was born on 7/7/37 in Sanish, North Dakota, the son of Hagen and Esther (Dutton) Carlson. In 1958, Haakon was married to his wife of 64 years, Janice (Zavalney) Carlson. Haakon graduated Medical School from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1964.

After early practice years in MN and ND, Haakon & Janice moved their young family permanently to Wisconsin. They raised three children, Lisa, James Haakon (Jamie) & Rebecca in Prairie du Sac. Haakon became the 3 ^rd physician partner at Prairie Clinic, practicing at Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital (Sauk Prairie Healthcare) for many years.

At age 15, Haakon promised God he would become a Christian Doctor. True to his word, he provided compassionate care for many years, especially to the poor and downtrodden. In 1999 he established the Good Neighbor Clinic, a free primary care clinic that continues to serve individuals who have no medical insurance or whose medical insurance fees keep them from accessing care.

Haakon enjoyed hiking, biking, tennis, canoeing & sailing. He loved spending time in his woodworking shop at the family cottage on Lake Wisconsin. He appreciated a good brandy in the evening. Haakon was an inspirational parent, grandparent, and great grandparent. He had the gift of encouragement & was a thoughtful leader.

Haakon is survived by his wife Janice, brother Harold, daughters Lisa (Pat) Pickarts, Rebecca (Bowe) Williams, grandchildren, Paige (Tim) Ederer, Patrick (Fabian) Pickarts, Tell Haakon (Ashley) Pickarts, Grayson & Genesis Williams. Great grand-children Cameron, Theodore & Elias Haakon Ederer, Joseph & Tatum Pickarts.

Haakon was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Agnes, Esther & Don. He is also preceded by his son, Jamie.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, August 18,2022 at St John's Lutheran Church, Prairie du Sac, with Pastor Fred Rilling officiating. A visitation will be held from 9am-11am on Thursday at the church prior to the funeral. Burial will be in the Prairie du Sac Cemetery.
