Obituary

Henry Joseph Flogel of rural Mazomanie died peacefully at home on April 23, 2022, after a short struggle with cancer. He was born on March 12, 1928, the middle child of 11, to John and Eleanora Flogel in Dickeyville, Wisconsin. He grew up on a farm and helped with work on the homestead, as well as on those of other family and friends throughout southern Wisconsin and the Dubuque, Iowa area. Early in his career he knew horse teams and how to run them. His parents and siblings held many parties playing cards, music and dancing.  Through these parties his family and Dolores Pettera's family became good friends.  One day Hank finally got the nerve to ask Dolores out on a date.  They married on Decoration Day, May 31, 1954. They started farming 50/50 with his dad in Cuba City, WI and later found a farm to purchase in the fertile valley between Mazomanie and Black Earth in 1961. He loved raising, harvesting and eating apples. "An apple a day" kept the doctor away for 94 years.  Throughout his long career as a dairy farmer, he also raised hogs, cattle, corn, alfalfa, and potatoes, even after finally retiring the dairy in 1988. In addition to working his own farm, he helped out anyone in need, sold Archer Oil, and held many roles in the Mazomanie Mutual Insurance Company. His generosity was spread far and wide. His many hobbies included card playing and fishing, with many trips with friends and family to practically everywhere in Wisconsin.  He was a long and active member of the St. Barnabas Catholic Church and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus council 7811 in Mazomanie. He was also an active volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Henry is survived by his wife, Dolores, brother John (Jack) Flogel, sister Ruth Roling, his children Thomas (Carol), Aggie Macdonald, Leo (Diana), Ray, Cletus (Sue), Jim, Therese (Jim) McKenzie, Hal (Sara), Paul (Judy), Allen (Jen), and Steve (Lisa), 28 grandchildren, and 24(+2) great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Francis, Roy and Bob; sisters Charlotte Miller, Olive Wiederholt, Rosemary Gassman, Celeste Wissing and Lou Vosberg; son-in-law Mike Macdonald; daughters-in-law Val Flogel & Dawn Flogel; and a grandson Brian Schulze.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, Apr. 30, 2022 at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, 410 Cramer St., Mazomanie.  A visitation will be held Friday, Apr. 29 from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm for Hank's family and elderly friends, and will continue until 7:00 pm at Hooverson Funeral Home, Hwy 14 West Mazomanie.  Visitation will also be held from 9:00 am until 9:45 am the morning of mass at the funeral home.  Interment will be held at the St. Barnabas Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Agrace Hospice Care for their support and care in his last days.

A memorial will be established in Henry's name.
