Obituary

Howard Joseph Frey, age 91, died Friday, October 22, 2021, surrounded by his family following a brief illness. He was born in Roxbury on September 4, 1930, the son of the late George and Anna (Lochner) Frey.  He was united in marriage to Irene Ganser on July 9, 1955, at St. Aloysius Church in Sauk City.

After his service in the US Army, he spent the majority of his working years as an electrician working for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, retiring in 1994.  He was fortunate to enjoy a lengthy retirement playing an important role in the upbringing of all of his grandchildren who were his pride and joy. In addition to his grandkids, he enjoyed fishing, biking, hiking, playing cards, doing puzzles and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Irene; children, Randal (Joyce), Glenn (Lori), Laura (Terry) Breunig, Mark (Tara) and Susan (Todd) Statz; grandchildren, Ryan (Nicky) Frey, Mike Lund-Knill, Courtney Olson (Colton Johnson), Dallas and Elise Breunig (Murray Dunsirn), Allana and Ayden Frey, and Leah (Alex Secord) and Erin Statz; and great grandchildren Odin and Quill Frey. Additionally, he is survived by his siblings, Bernard, Phillip (Rita), James (Sybilla) and David (Judy) and sister-in-law Carol.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Harold (Phyllis), Roman, Ralph, George, Jr (Barbara) and his sister, Mathilda (Charlie) Schepp and a sister in law, Dolores Frey.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, October 28, 2021, at 11:00 am at St. Aloysius Church in Sauk City, Wisconsin.  Burial will follow the mass at the St. Aloysius Cemetery.  A visitation will be held at 10:00 am preceding the mass at Hooverson Funeral Home, 251 Water St., Sauk City. There will be a celebration of life at the Dorf Haus in Roxbury following the burial.

Masks are encouraged. We realize many of you may not be comfortable attending because of COVID exposure risk. We completely understand.

The family would like to thank the ICU staff at the UW Hospital who has provided kind and compassionate care making his last few weeks comfortable and keeping his family well informed and involved.
