Obituary

James Jay Mooney, age 50, passed away of natural causes on Tuesday, December 7, 2010. Jim was born to James and Shirley Mooney in Fargo, North Dakota on September 4th, 1960. He married Allison Brown on November 21, 1981, in Cavalier, North Dakota.

As a teenager, Jim spent countless hours playing and teaching guitar which led to his first career as a professional musician in a rock and roll band. Jim found great pleasure in playing his guitar, most recently perfecting the Hawaiian slack key style after many trips to the Islands.

He completed his Master's Degree in Plant Breeding and Horticulture from North Dakota State University and his Ph.D. in Plant Breeding and Genetics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Developing new chile pepper varieties which thrive in the Midwest growing season, cooking any recipe that included chile peppers and developing the next exciting pickled spicy holiday gift for his friends and relatives were skills he perfected. Jim had great passion for his garden and when discussing his latest chile pepper varieties, he would light up the room!

His greatest joy came from spending time with his family, enjoying many great vacations and family time at the Northwoods lake house. His favorite Northwoods event was the annual Mooney Family Fishing Tournament. Being able to work at his chosen profession through his home and caring for Robert and Kaitlin were his greatest joys. He loved discussing Robert's latest research projects and cheering at Kaitlin's sporting events.

Jim is survived by his wife Allison of 29 years, his son Robert, daughter Kaitlin, sisters Pam Marquard (Wayne) Ellisville, MO and Kim Kenner (Curt) Maddock, ND, sister-in-law Janet Hartz (Gary) Poolesville MD., brothers-in-law R. Jim Brown (Diane) Boca Raton, FL and David Brown Bloomington MN and very special friend of the family Colette Nordstrom, Cavalier, ND.

A private service for the family will be held on Saturday, December 11th with a reception for friends of the family at the Blue Spoon Cafe at 550 Water Street in Prairie du Sac, WI on Saturday, December 11th from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
