Obituary

James H Weeks, Lieutenant Colonel, US Army (Ret): Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Passed peacefully 6/21/2025 at age 91 in Prairie du Sac, WI. Previously a long-term resident of Henderson, IA, Jim's military service took him and his family to multiple states and countries. Jim's love of family, dedication to country, humor, never-ending curiosity and mastery of all things mechanical will be deeply missed.

Preceded in death by Velda, his wife of more than 70 years, parents Mina and LeRoy Weeks; siblings Forest Weeks (Ruth), Lucille Mitchell (John), Helen Porter (Herschel), Henry Weeks (Doris), Elsie Taylor (Earl) and Martha Sorem (Stanley); and grandson Benjamin Voss.

Survived by children Kristin Voss, John Weeks (Sheryl), Kimberly McFarlin (Robert), Brian Weeks (Mary), and David Weeks (Kim); grandchildren Sarah Bierstadt, Ian Weeks (Sue), David Weeks (Becky), Hanna Weeks, Jacob McFarlin (Ashley), Megan Kufahl (Greg), James McFarlin, Evan Weeks (Kim), Renee Gesch (Karl), Rachel Weeks, Nathaniel Weeks, Sydney Weeks; great-grandchildren Fiona and Jason Bierstadt; Evelyn, John and James Weeks; Tessa and Tristan McFarlin; Mariah, Eden and Ezra Kufahl; Margo and Ellen Gesch; and Jim and Velda's beloved canine companion Sadie.

Jim was born January 13, 1934, in Nevada, IA and graduated from Nevada High School in 1952, where he met the love-of-his life, Velda Hess. They were married March 21, 1953, while Jim was attending and working at Iowa State College (now Iowa State University). Following college graduation in 1956, Jim entered the United States Army, beginning a 20-year military career in the US Army Corps of Engineers. During his service, Jim and family were stationed in Germany, India, Virginia, Texas, South Carolina, Kansas and Ohio. He served two tours in Vietnam during the war, receiving the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with Valor and numerous other commendations. Jim retired from military service in 1976.

Following retirement from military service, Jim and Velda moved back to their beloved home state of Iowa, settling on a five-acre property near the southwest town of Henderson. Their return to Iowa lead to Jim's second career as a Farm Bureau Regional Manager for more than 20 years. Over several years, Jim, Velda and family built a beautiful seven-bedroom home, which became a wonderful gathering place for holidays, grandkids' summer camps and visits to unwind and enjoy Iowa's rural lifestyle. The homestead included ample space for working on almost anything with two or more wheels and an engine.

Jim gave generously of his time and mechanical skills to mentor and encourage his children and grandchildren on engine and auto maintenance, repair and rebuilding, welding, etc. His legacy lives on in many who are now proficient and enthusiastic mechanics, racers and general gear-heads. These times with Jim will be deeply missed. Jim was also a skilled carpenter and furniture builder. Treasured oak and pine tables, end tables, cabinets, hutches, rocking horses and other beautifully hand-made items adorn the homes of his family. He was always willing to help family with home remodeling projects and often volunteered his carpentry skills to build furniture or make repairs at Zion Congregational Church in Treynor, IA, where he and Velda were long-time members. Additionally, he volunteered for many years at Jenny Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA.

We are comforted to know that Jim and Velda are together again in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Thank you to the caring staff at Pine Villa in Prairie du Sac, WI as well as Agrace Hospice.

Jim and Velda will be interred together in a graveside ceremony at Woodland Cemetery (AKA Iowa Center Cemetery), Iowa Center, IA.

Memorials may be given to St. John's Lutheran Church, Prairie du Sac.
