Obituary

Joan Marie Deneen, age 60, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack in Janesville on Sunday, February 26, 2012. She was born in Madison on March 12, 1951 to Joseph and Rosemary (Dowdell) Deneen. Joan graduated from Wisconsin Heights High School, class of 1969, and went on to attend University of Wisconsin Whitewater where she obtained her teaching degree in 1974. She taught Special Education at Parker High School in Janesville for 32 years, retiring in 2006. Joan was a lifelong advocate for people with special needs. Whether it was giving the shoes off of her own feet, or providing opportunities for people to engage in life experiences that they might not have had otherwise, she was a champion for people who needed help. She was proud to have had initiated a group called Circle of Friends, whose mission was to provide opportunities for independent living for young adults with special needs. Joan recently started a new venture, Wrapt in Love, that provided purposeful employment for individuals with special needs. She was passionate about knitting and gardening and was a member of the Madison Knitters Guild and the Janesville Rotary Garden Club.

She is survived by her son, Nicholas Knickerbocker of Whitewater.

Her mother, Rosemary Deneen, Mazomanie.

3 brothers; Dennis (Greer) Deneen, Mazomanie; Dan Deneen, Mazomanie; Neal (Donna) Deneen, Lindstrom, Mn.
A sister; Jacqueline (Brad) Fest, Franklin, Tn. And a very special lifelong friend and cousin, Mary Lucey of Waukesha, WI.

A former husband, Lanny C. Knickerbocker, Janesville.

She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her father Joseph Deneen.

A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 11:00am at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, Mazomanie. Friends may call from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday, March 2, 2012 and the morning of the service one hour prior to mass at the HOOVERSON FUNERAL HOME, Hwy 14, West, Mazomanie.
In leiu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Rotary Botanical Gardens - Wellness Garden.
