IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John F.
Frey
March 14, 1945 – December 28, 2023
A man who was loved by many, enjoyed time spent with family, friends, cooking and adventuring the outdoors. There was nothing he couldn't fix, build, or tinker on. John F. Frey, 78, of Roxbury, Wisconsin died doing what he loved on December 28, 2023.
He was born in Roxbury on March 14, 1945 to Vincent and Martha Frey. John met the love of his life, Cheryl (Sprecher) Frey in 1965. Excited to start their new lives together, the two were married September 17, 1966 in Roxbury. John retired from Oscar Mayer's in 1997 after thirty-four years. John maintained various jobs post-retirement including working at Maple Bluff Golf Course and Wyttenbach's Meat Market.
When John wasn't working, he could be found teaching his love for the outdoors to his grandchildren via fishing, hunting, and trapping. Trapping became a favorite hobby for him and his grandsons to bond over. He was known to many as "Trapper John" as he shared his passion well beyond his immediate family. He loved hunting and made numerous trips out west and throughout Canada. Over the years John and Cheryl adventured to all fifty states and several countries. One of John's favorite trips included a cruise through the Panama Canal. John was well known for his cooking as he was incapable of making a bad meal. He delivered food to just about everyone for any occasion. One of John's treasured accomplishments was his time spent cutting and splitting wood for over forty years to heat his home. His selfless acts of service will be cherished for decades to come.
John is survived by wife Cheryl, daughters Carrie (Jon) Ballweg and Amy Frey, grandchildren Alex (Ryley) Ballweg, Aaron (Abby) Ballweg, Andrew (Cassie) Ballweg, Lexy (Trae Runyan) Blake, and Lance Blake, and great grandchildren Oliver Ballweg and Henry Ballweg, Sister in law Helen Frey, and Siblings Nancy (Dave) Schoepp, Alfred (Alberta) Frey, Marvin (Darlene Kirch) Frey, Roger Frey, Richard (Kris) Frey, Mary Ann (Gary) Wipperfurth, Joan (Norman) Campbell, Diane (Gerald) Endres, Brother in law Steve (Cheryl) Sprecher. Along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
John was preceded in death by parents Vincent and Martha Frey, Cheryl's parents Lyle & Evelyn (Kindschi) Sprecher, brothers Lavern Frey and Art Frey, sister in laws Pam (DeNoble) Frey, Carol (Ballweg) Frey and Maryellen (Meinholz) Frey.
A celebration of John's life will be held on April 20, 2024 at the Ballweg Farm where he had spent countless hours. More details to follow.
Thank you for our wonderful time together, we all will miss that smirk. "Danke"
