Obituary

John Hoelzlhammer, Jr., age 91, passed away on Apr. 27, 2018 at Maplewood Sauk Prairie.  He was born in Milwaukee, WI on Nov. 1, 1926 to the late John and Katharina (Schneider) Hoelzlhammer Sr.  John graduated from Milwaukee Boys Tech High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy.  He proudly served during WWII aboard a Cannon-Class Destroyer Escort, The U.S.S. Hemminger in the South Pacific.  After his discharge from the service he used his G.I. bill to attend the Milwaukee School of Engineering where he obtained a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.  John married Janet Denomme on June 20, 1957; she preceded him in death on Aug. 6, 1987.  He later married Marilyn (Jones) Greimel on Feb. 14, 1991.  John retired from Calumet Industries in East Chicago, Indiana in 1989 and moved to the Sauk Prairie shortly after.  He was an avid reader of current events and enjoyed gardening, landscaping, being outdoors and chasing the squirrels away from the bird feeders.  He was a member of the Lachmund-Cramer VFW Post 7694 of Prairie du Sac where he served two terms as Post Commander and as Bugler with their funeral Honor Guard detail. He was proud of his service to his country and recently enjoyed a Badger Honor Flight with his son John in 2012.

John is survived by his wife, Marilyn; 3 sons, John J. (Kathy) of Wisconsin Rapids, Carl (Cindy) of Savage, Mn., Eric of Olympia, Wa; grandchildren, Steven, Jessie, Heidi, Sara, Lydia, and Abigail; 2 great-grandchildren, Amelia and Breelyn; a sister, Louise Guyton; Marilyn's children, Michael Greimel, Jennifer (Douglas) Gjertson; grandchildren, Sommer (Darryl) Berney, Casey Rowe, Kristin and Matthew Greimel, Tyler (Brittany) Greimel and Vincenti Greimel; great-grandchildren, Ari, Ava and Ezra Rowe, Nova Greimel and Calvin Berney.   He is further survived by other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents and wife, Janet, he was preceded in death by a sister, Helena Van Den Elzen; and Marilyn's sons, Mark and Mitchell Greimel.

John's family would like to thank the staff at Meadow Ridge Assisted Living in Baraboo, Maplewood of Sauk Prairie, and Agrace HospiceCare for their loving care of John.

A memorial service will be held on May 19, 2018 at 11:00 am at Concordia United Methodist Church, 585 5 th St., Prairie du Sac.  A visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of service.    Interment will follow at the Sauk Prairie Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Lachmund-Cramer VFW Post 7694.  A luncheon will follow at the VFW Clubhouse, VFW Drive, Prairie du Sac.
