John Sutherland Miller Jr, age 85, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Apr. 13, 2025, at Middleton Crossing Retirement Home. He was born in Kalamazoo, MI on Mar. 4, 1940, to the late John and Patricia (Jones) Miller Sr. John attended Cranbrook Military Academy, in Bloomfield, MI. John went on to college at Yale University (New Haven, CT) where he obtained his BA in Business. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served as a paratrooper in the 11th Air Assault Division. Following his service, he went on to become the President of the Trust Dept., at the Comerica National Bank. John was united in marriage to Julie Jennings on Aug. 24, 1968; They had 2 children, Robert and Patricia.
John decided to go back to school and went on to earn a Master's degree from The Warton School of Business in Pennsylvania. He finished his doctorate at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI and taught at the University from 1971 until 1978. John earned his second doctorate in 1985 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison Business School where he was a professor from 1978 until 1982. John later taught Business Classes at M.A.T.C. in Madison from 1982 until his retirement in 2004.
John was a patriot and proud of his country; he enjoyed shooting guns, craft beers (at Old Chicago) and riding his many different Harley-Davidsons. He loved the outdoors, photography, and camping in the back of his truck while visiting many parks around Wisconsin. One of his most memorable trips was a month-long trip to Alaska with his son where they traveled by small plane exploring the state.
John is survived by his son, Robert; grandchildren, Damien, Paris, and Anastatia. John is further survived by a sister in-law, Sue Miller and other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Julie; daughter, Patricia; grandson, Logan; and brother, Fred.
A Celebration of John's Life will be held at a later date. John will be interred in the Battle Creek Memorial Park, MI.
