IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John K.
Mowitz
November 17, 1940 – December 20, 2023
John Kent Mowitz, age 83, unexpectedly passed away in the comfort and privacy of his home on Wednesday, December 20 from cardiac arrest. John was fortunate to have many wonderful people in his life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
John was born on November 17,1940 in Prairie du Sac Wisconsin and attended PDS High School, Class of 1958. John joined the US Navy at age 17 where he served as ship's helmsman and traveled the world in service to our country. He often reminisced about the camaraderie he shared with his shipmates and compassion he felt for the impoverished communities they would see when stationed. Barcelona, Spain was his favorite port.
John returned to Prairie du Sac in 1964 where he started his vocation as a carpenter for Wick Builders. For many years, he excelled as a craftsman and eventually became a successful businessman running his own construction firm, Design Structures, with his longtime friend and partner, Jim Kirner.
Despite John's many professional accomplishments, his most meaningful contributions in life were the personal relationships he shared with friends and family. John was beloved by many and known for his quiet strength, loyalty, integrity, humor and immense generosity. He would be the first to pay the bill and the last to leave the bar – an endearing trait that he carried with him throughout his lifetime. Everyone needs at least one good friend, and "Johnny Mo" was that person for everyone.
In 1993, John combined his talent for building and affinity for water by creating a home of his own on Lake Wisconsin with his love, Mary Moseman. Together, they enjoyed more than three decades of boating, fishing, golfing, traveling, hunting and hosting holidays and happy occasions in Merrimac. Their custom-framing business, Décor & More, remained in operation until 2022 and provided many happy customers with beautifully preserved artwork and personal memories.
John is survived by his son, David Mowitz, daughter Amy (Christian) Griffin, two grandchildren, Mollie and Max Recob, stepson Wade (Casey) Moseman, brother Gene Mowitz, brother-in-law Maurice (Jackie) Nolden, plus many adored nieces, nephews and extended family members. He is preceded in death by his life-long partner, Mary Moseman, sister Joan Preston, sister Karen Nolden and parents Arnold and Alice Mowitz.
John's family would like extend heartfelt thanks to some very special people who played a pivotal role in his life, especially during his last 18 months as a widower. To the Lewis/Fiene families and the members of the Baraboo Golf & Eagle Inn Breakfast Club: Words cannot express our gratitude for your sincerity, support and love. We are also thankful for the countless family members, colleagues and neighbors who extended a kind word, a cooked meal or a thoughtful phone call. Your friendship and concern lifted his spirits and gave him so many reasons to laugh again.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Monday, January 15 from 1 to 5 pm at Baraboo Country Club. A brief memorial service will begin at 1:30 with loving memories and libations to follow. John's final resting place will be at St. Aloysious Cemetery in Sauk City alongside his sweetheart, Mary.
John supported many charitable causes throughout his lifetime, including Badger Honor Flight and Wounded Warriors. In lieu of flowers or memorial gifts, please consider a contribution to one of these organizations, or simply do something kind for someone else in need.
