Obituary

John Winiger, age 95, died on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at Maplewood of Sauk Prairie. He was born in Albany, WI on March 6, 1913, the son of the late John and Caroline (Raber) Winiger Sr., immigrants from Switzerland. John was very proud of his Swiss heritage. John graduated from Mount Horeb High School in 1931 and then attended Dunwoody Institute of Technology in Minneapolis. He was united in marriage to Esther Voeglie on June 18, 1935. That same year the couple moved to Prairie du Sac and began Winiger's Home Bakery, and also purchased and operated the Sauk City Bakery, retiring from the bakery business in 1976. John and his family spent a lot of time on Lake Wisconsin. He was a charter member of the local Lions Club; a fifty year member and former chief of the Prairie du Sac Fire Department; former member of the Lake Wisconsin Country Club; and a member of the First United Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon and an elder. He is survived by a son, Phil (Jenifer) Winiger of Madison; a son-in-law, Al Behrens of Milwaukee; a grandson, Tim (Amy) Behrens of Grafton and their children, Kirstin, Alex, Harleigh and Seth; a granddaughter, Amy (Brion Schaefer) Behrens of Evansdale, IA; and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Esther, on November 16, 1987 and a daughter, Mary Behrens. A Memorial Service will be held at FIRST UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, Sauk City, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2009 with Pastor Bill Kapp officiating. Friends may call after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday. Interment will be held at a later date in the Prairie du Sac Cemetery.
