IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Kenneth "Ken"
J Frey
October 13, 1954 – February 18, 2024
Kenneth James Frey passed away on Sunday February 18, 2024 after a long battle with frontotemporal dementia. He was 69.
Ken was born October 13, 1954 to Roman and Carol Frey in Sauk City Wisconsin, the oldest of eight children. He graduated from Sauk Prairie High School in 1972, and not long afterwards enlisted in the US Army. It was near the end of the Vietnam War and Ken was stationed in Germany, in the 330th ASA CO (AVN) - a unit of army intelligence. After 4 years of military service, Ken went back to school and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Master's Degree in Architecture. He began his career in 1983 at BWBR in Saint Paul, obtaining his Professional Architecture License soon after.
In 1998, Ken turned his life-long hobby of cabinet making and design into a small business called Accent on Detail. He was the cabinet builder and owner/architect - sharing his talent and experience with others by designing, building, and installing high quality custom cabinetry and furniture. After three years of running his own business, he decided to return to BWBR and eventually retired from there as a Senior Project Architect and Quality Assurance Manager in 2018.
Ken's love of carpentry kept him busy the rest of his life - always making improvements to his beautiful home in Saint Paul. Ken was an encouraging neighbor - always offering to help others; always smiling; always ready to strike up a conversation. He was an avid walker, so many people in his neighborhood knew him. Ken was also an excellent golfer and thoroughly enjoyed the annual golf events with his BWBR friends. One of the very special acts of kindness Ken was known for was remembering every birthday in his family - 7 siblings, their spouses, and 19 nieces and nephews - and sending them a special birthday card each year.
He is survived by his daughter Madeline Frey - of whom he was very proud, his mother Carol Frey, siblings Chuck (Anita) Frey, Kurt (Debbie) Frey, Craig (Denise) Frey, Karen (Paul) Peetz, Kim (Pam) Frey, Ted (Rebecca) Frey, and Tony (Renee) Frey, and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father Roman Frey and nephew Zac Wasendorf.
A Celebration of Life open house will be held from 1 - 4pm on Saturday, March 16th, 2024 at the Dorf Haus Supper Club in Sauk City, WI. A luncheon buffet will be available and special memories will be shared starting at 2pm, followed by a 21-gun salute. Everyone who knew Ken is invited to attend.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at both Cascade Creek Memory Care in Rochester, MN and Mayo Clinic Hospice for the truly remarkable loving care they gave Ken to the very end, always honoring him with respect and dignity. Memorials can be made to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (theaftd.org), to advance FTD research and support other families impacted by FTD.
