Obituary

Lilah Lorna Sprecher (named for the lilacs her mother saw from the bedroom window as Lilah was born), age 93, passed away peacefully at Sauk Prairie Healthcare Center on Monday, May 18, 2015. She was born at home, the only child of the late William and Anna (Wilhelm) Homuth, in Sumpter Township. She was proud of her rural upbringing and never left her Sumpter roots. Throughout her life, she would go back to that same farm and happily hike the property. Lilah was a graduate of Prairie du Sac High School, class of 1940. Lilah married Leslie M. Sprecher on November 11, 1950; he preceded her in death on September 9, 1999. Before Les' health failed, they spent many happy times traveling throughout the US.

Lilah was an ever-curious, life-long learner. She was an avid reader of local and regional newspapers, political biographies, the Bible and her daily devotionals. She was a loyal, long-term member of Bible study and prayer groups of First United Church of Christ, Sauk City.

She took pride in the details of doing things "right," including her sharp book keeping skills, always keeping her checkbook balanced, excellent Palmer method style penmanship, and weed free, lush gardens. She was an excellent baker, with rhubarb pie, Christmas cut-out cookies and marshmallow fudge bars at the top of the list her family often requested.

She actively enjoyed listening to music -- from Lawrence Welk to hymns. In her young adulthood, she played piano for many Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church (Prairie du Sac) services and weddings, and later enjoyed traveling with her pastors for services conducted at area senior homes and playing hymns for residents to sing along.

Lilah revered and honored family – her cousins were her friends/siblings. She gave her grandchildren the precious gift of her undivided attention, happily reading stacks of books they would request. She took great pride in being an exceptional caregiver throughout her life, taking care of her parents, growing kids & grandkids, and, later in life, ailing husband.

Survivors include her 2 children, Lon (Sue) Sprecher of Middleton, and Nancy Sprecher of Minneapolis, MN; 2 grandchildren, Megan Sprecher (Jori Maron) of Cleveland, OH, their son, Theo Maron; and Claire (Dan) Lager of Hau'ula, HI; brother in-law, Halsey (Lyla) Sprecher, sister in-law, Marion (Ed) Yngsdal, brother in-law, Keith Sprecher, sister in-law, Nancy Sprecher, sister in-law, Ruby (Neil) Alwin; she is further survived by many other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, May 22, 2015 at the First United Church of Christ, 504 Washington Ave., Sauk City, with Pastor William Kapp officiating. A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at the Hooverson Funeral Home, 251 Water St., Sauk City, from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be held in the Prairie du Sac Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Church of Christ, Sauk City, or the UW Carbone Cancer Center, 600 Highland Ave., Madison, WI.
