Obituary

Louis "Lou" Paul Remer Jr. age 84, passed peacefully on March 5, 2024, at Watertown Regional Hospital with his family present. Lou was born on August 14,1939, in Burlington, WI. He attended school in Racine, graduating from William Horlick High School. He attended the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) followed by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1961. He completed his Master's in Business Administration in 1964, as well as his Master's in Mechanical Engineering in 1965.

Lou enjoyed a long and rewarding career with IBM where he earned national recognition as a Systems Engineer. He would meet his future wife of 41 years, Sharon, during this time. After retiring from IBM, Lou moved on to a second career with Lands' End, where he was a Systems Engineer as well, eventually managing the team.

Lou spent his life in Wisconsin, living in the Middleton - Cross Plains area during much of his working years. He later moved to Lake Wisconsin near Merrimac where he thoroughly enjoyed the lake, fishing and boating.

He was an avid outdoorsman his entire life. He deeply enjoyed fishing, hunting, scuba diving, and hiking in the woods. In addition, he accented his enjoyment of Lake Wisconsin with annual fishing trips to Canada with friends. In his spare time, he liked to play cards, complete crosswords and read. Lou was a voracious reader of both fiction and nonfiction. His favorite fiction included humor, mysteries, and science fiction.

Lou had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. He was an enthusiastic reader of history and advanced physics, as well as other sciences. He liked to exercise his intellect, as well as share his knowledge with other interested friends and family. Complementing his love of learning was Lou's understated wit, as he often punctuated a moment with unexpected humor, leaving the room in stitches – Lou was very funny.

Most importantly, Lou was utterly devoted to his family who daily appreciated his patience, gentle encouragement and unending support. His love was vast, and he will be deeply missed.

Lou is survived by his wife, Sharon Remer, his son, Brian Remer (Colleen), daughter Kathryn Thornton (Justin), and his grandchildren Alex Remer, Kasey Remer, and Liam Thornton. He was preceded in death by his parents Louis Remer Sr. and Kathryn Remer.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, March 15, 2024, at Hooverson Funeral Home in Sauk City. A visitation will be held from 1:00pm-2:00pm immediately preceding the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Lou's name to the charity of your choice.
