Lyla M. Schabacker, age 91, of Prairie du Sac died Monday morning, August 6, 2018, peacefully in her sleep at Maplewood Nursing Home. She was born June 12, 1927 in Manchester, Iowa, the daughter of Lyle and Mildred(Traver) Retz. Lyla graduated from Manchester High School in 1945 and from St. Luke's Nursing School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa as a Cadet Nurse in 1948. On September 28, 1947, Lyla married Clarence Schabacker. Lyla worked as a Registered Nurse at Delaware County Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Manchester, Iowa. She moved with her husband to a farm near BlackHawk, WI. in 1960 where they raised 8 children. Lyla continued her nursing career at Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital where she retired after 30 years of service. Lyla remained active in the community after retirement; volunteering and using her passion of quilting and knitting to serve babies and children all across the world. She was a loving and supportive parent and grandparent. Lyla had a servant's heart, always considering the needs of others before her own. Her kind spirit remained with her until her passing.
Lyla is survived by one brother, Richard (Shirley) Retz of Manchester, Iowa; her eight children, David of Rochelle, Illinois, Susan (Kenneth) Simons of Sycamore, Illinois, Carol Chitwood of Dodgeville, Thomas of Sauk City, Ruth (Gary) Neubauer of Lodi, Roy of Sauk City, Barbara Stenner of Prairie du Sac, Karen (Fred) McIntosh of Mazomanie; ten grandchildren, Matthew Chitwood (Cindy Woods)of Dodgeville, Emily (David) Rhoden of Snowhomish, WA, Jon(Han)Simons of Normal, Illinois, Laura (Jason) Dinkins of Geneva, Illinois, Andrea(Jamie)McMahon of Woodbridge,VA, Wade(Kristi) Neubauer of Sauk City, Jack (Stormy Perry)Snake of Tomah, Jessica Snake of Baraboo, Ann(Wes)Givens of Wauwatosa , Bryan McIntosh of Mazomanie, and seventeen great grandchildren.
Lyla was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Schabacker in 2007; her parents, Lyle and Mildred Retz, and two brothers, Milton and Ronald Retz.
A private service for the family will be held on August 9, 2018.
Memorials may be made in Lyla's name to the Sauk Prairie Hospital Foundation or Maplewood Nursing Home, Memory Unit.
