Margaret Joyce (Hill) Colby, age 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 25, 2014 at The Pines, Prairie du Sac. Margaret was born in Sumpter Township on April 22, 1921 at the home of her parents, Harold and Florence (Jones) Hill. Margaret attended Kings Corner Country School and graduated from Prairie du Sac High School in 1939. She was united in marriage to Loren E. Colby on April 6, 1940. They farmed in the Town of Prairie du Sac for 1 year, and then lived and farmed in the Town of Sumpter until Loren's death. At that time Margaret moved to town where she met many warm and welcoming people at Pine Glen Senior apartments and later at The Pines assistant living facility.
Margaret was a life long resident of the Sauk prairie, a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Royal Neighbors of America and of the Order of Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda J. Schoepp; husband; parents; and an infant sister.
While Margaret was an only child, she is survived by a large family including: five children, Karen Colby (Ron Reese) of Camp Verde, AZ, Jacquelyn (Don) Barnhill of Reedsburg, Marjorie (Robert) Banner of Janesville, Candace (Leon) Buckles of Sauk City, Timothy (Marcia) Colby of North Freedom/Sauk Prairie, son-in-law, Paul Schoepp of Prairie du Sac; 14 grandchildren, Teresa (Eric) Zoromski of Saukville, Gail (Paul Oden) Wuesthoff of Mequon, Peter Schoepp of Prairie du Sac, Patrick (Carla Wachter) Schoepp of Sauk City, Michelle (Dennis) Delaney of North Freedom/Sauk Prairie, Michael (Sara) Cummings of Hartford, Melanie (Brad) Suchla of Prairie du Sac, Mark (Crystal) Banner of Janesville, Cathy Wobig of Janesville, Joseph Buckles of Sauk City, Alissa Buckles (Dave Skibba) of Prairie du Sac, Kelly (Brad) Wiskus of San Diego, CA, Sarah (Justin) Zajicek of North Freedom/Sauk Prairie, Raechel (Mitch) Robinson of Colorado; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great, great granddaughter, other relatives and many friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m on Saturday, September 27, 2014, at Hooverson Funeral Home, Sauk City, WI, with Pastor John P. Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Sauk Prairie Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
Due to Margaret's life long connection to Sauk Prairie, the family would ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Margaret's name to: Town of Sumpter Badger Cemetery Endowment Fund, Attn. Robin Meier, 11097 Kings Corner Road, North Freedom, WI 53951. All monetary donations will be used for the maintenance and upkeep of the Pioneer, Thoelke and Miller cemeteries located in the former Badger Ammunitions Plant.
The family would like to extend many thanks to all those wonderful people who allowed Margaret to live a long and pleasant life.
