Obituary

Marvin Joseph Roos, age 93, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at Maplewood of Sauk Prairie. He was born in Roxbury on March 26, 1916 to Martin and Josephine (Truehl) Roos. He was united in marriage to Clara Margaret Alt on August 11, 1936. Marvin grew up in Sauk City working with his dad and brother, raising chickens at Roos Poultry. He lived in Milwaukee and worked there for 3 years at Roth Washer Co. Marvin then bought a farm in Sauk City, owning and operating his own trucking business (Roos Trucking) hauling livestock, while Clara enjoyed raising her chickens until 1946, at which time he bought a lumber yard (Roos Lumber Co.) in Mazomanie. While in Mazomanie, he was very active in community services, which included being a school bus driver, managing many sporting activities which he totally enjoyed all of his life, and was one of the first 5 members that started the Mazomanie Lions Club. In January, 1960 he bought Roses Bar in Sauk City (now the Press Box), which the couple owned and operated until retiring in 1973. Marvin always loved sports of every kind and gave many hours in being the "sidewalk" supervisor and helped with fundraisers when the Sauk Prairie Hockey rink was being built. In the summer, he could always be found at the Sauk Prairie ballpark watching the Twins play. He loved being around people, and if he didn't know you, he would ask who you were and where you were from, then a conversation would start. He loved his family and enjoyed watching and/or hearing about his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they were involved in their sporting events. In addition, he also loved participating in the activities at Maplewood while visiting his wife Clara for over 3 years, along with making many friends along the way, and loved playing Bingo. Recently he was a resident there himself and continued to enjoy the great staff. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and Sauk Prairie Optimists Club. He is survived by the love of his life, his "sweetie" of a wife of almost 73 years, Clara of Maplewood, Sauk City; two daughters, Shirley (Fred) Kalsow of Mazomanie and Carol (Theron) Hill of North Freedom; daughter-in-law, Velma Roos of Corpus Christi, TX; seven grandchildren, Mike (Nancy) Kalsow of Black Earth, Jeff (Tammy) Kalsow of Mazomanie, Chris (Tara) Hill of Arena, Lisa (Greg) Ziech of Sauk City, Deanne (Ron) Kincaid of South Carolina, David Roos of Tennessee, Daryl Roos of Hawaii, three step-grandchildren, Mike and Spurgeon Root, and Deb (Root) Kell, 16 great-grandchildren, Jeremy and Ryan Kalsow, Isaac, David, Katya, Vika and Lyosha Kalsow; Sarah, Cassie and Cody Kincaid; Destiny, Dawson and Daelyn Hill; Dallas Ziech; Dominic and Marvin Lee Roos; two sisters, Carolyn Schwarz of Sauk City and Lorraine Shunk of Verona; other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Marvin "Bud" Roos and Steve Roos; and six siblings, Marcella "Sally" Simson, Rheinhard "Hardy" Roos, Werner Roos, Linus "Marty" Roos, Edna Drunasky and Erna Betts. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. ALOYSIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH, Sauk City, at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 with Fr. Jared Hood officiating. Burial will follow in St. Aloysius Cemetery. Friends may call at HOOVERSON FUNERAL HOME, Sauk City, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 and also on Wednesday morning after 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

Words cannot express all the appreciation we have for Dr. Koch, Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital and Maplewood, from the many residents and great, loving, and supportive staff who have become great friends. Great memories and we thank you all very much. Marvin will be missed by all his family and friends who touched his life and the lives he has touched.
