Mary Jane Campoll, our beloved mother, grandma and greatnana, left this world on November 23, 2009, at Maplewood Nursing Home in Sauk City. She had lost Hank, her husband and constant companion of 62 years, just four months earlier. Mary Jane Land was born on Feb. 12, 1919 in Pittsburgh, PA. Hank and Mary Jane loved Pittsburgh, where they spent most of their lives. Nothing short of a desire to be closer to their grandchildren could have convinced them to leave. As one nephew remarked, "Not many people retire to Wisconsin!" Mary Jane was a fighter whose saltiness and somewhat cynical sense of humor carried her through. Words cannot summarize a life of 90 years, but Mary Jane loved being a mother and a homemaker, all animals, "Guiding Light," and a good story. She had struggled mightily with macular degeneration and Parkinson's Disease along with other ailments. A few days before she passed away she said "I think it would be best to go home now. I'm just so tired."
Mary Jane is survived by daughter Ann (William Walter) of Sauk City and son Bill (Ginny) of Rocky Mount, NC; four grandchildren, Christy Campoll (Matt Deaner), Amelia Walter McGoldrick (Travis), Jesse Walter, and Joyce Campoll Donnelly (Christopher); and three great-grandchildren, Holden McGoldrick, Cole Donnelly and T.J. Deaner. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Shirley (Bill) Land, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers and sister-in-laws, John and Thelma Land, Edward and Jane Land, and Bill Land.
We would like to thank the wonderful staff of the Pines Assisted Living, sho made Hank and Mary Jane's last year the best it could be, and the kind staff at Maplewood, who cared to Mary Jane in her last months.
A memorial service will be held at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Pittsburgh in January.
