Mary A. Evert, age 75, passed away on Oct. 20, 2026 at Maplewood Nursing Home after a valiant almost 10-year battle with corticobasal degenerative disease. She was born March 13, 1951 to the late Russell and Marie (Hornung) Zeman. Mary was a graduate of Sauk Prairie High School; class of 1969 and was united in marriage to William “Bill” Evert on July 17, 1971. They made their home in Sauk City and raised their kids on the edge of town.
Anyone who knew Mary knew she could never sit still too long. She often walked through town-faster than most people run. She loved the outdoors, spending time on the lake and water skiing often in her earlier years. She was a hard worker and would be right alongside the boys with her own chain saw and when she operated the splitter, you’d better have your fingers out of the way. She worked as a paralegal for a couple larger Madison Law Firms and moonlighted as a court transcriptionist; her typing was fast and second to none. She and Bill enjoyed trips to the Caribbean, Alaska, Mexico, trips across the United States and to the north woods. Family gatherings were what she looked forward to most; she loved to have all her family at home, and to bake peanut clusters, gingerbread men and Christmas cookies with her grandchildren. Holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas where a special event at the Evert house.
She will be missed by her husband, Bill; her children, Scott (Jennifer) Evert, Tammy (Pat) Endthoff, and Aaron (Becky) Evert; her grandchildren, Jordan (Amanda), Brandon, Rachel, Kailey, Morgan, and Conner; great grandchildren, Kylie, Greyson, and Ryker; siblings, Rick (Deb) Zeman, Carolyn Tavenner, Ron (Margo)Zeman, Anna (Frank) Kick, Dan (Diane) Zeman, Janet (Ron Krasovec) Wood, Jane Zeman. She is further survived by other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and in-laws, Emil and Alice Evert.
