Obituary

Maurie, age 86, passed away peacefully at Maplewood Sauk Prairie Nursing Home on Dec. 12, 2025. He had suffered a sudden massive stroke on Dec. 2, and was unable to recover from it. On Dec. 8, he was admitted to Maplewood for comfort care following a brief Madison hospitalization.

Maurie was born July 10, 1939, to his parents, Wilbert and Marcella (Felix) Sprecher, on the family farm near Blackhawk, in rural Sauk City, WI.  He grew up loving farm life, tending to the livestock and the land with his dad and older brother, Wil. He was an active 4-H member in his youth. He graduated from Prairie du Sac High School in 1957. During those years, he enjoyed playing the trombone in the band. He attended Platteville College for two years, majoring in Agriculture. At age 22, he was called to serve in the Army for two years. He was always proud to be a veteran.

Soon after returning to farming, his interests included being on local softball teams, and bowling in the winter. The word was he was a pretty good fast-pitch pitcher for two teams, in Plain and Sauk City. He liked sharing his high bowling scores with his family. In his later years, golf games with buddies added to his enjoyment of sports. He always continued to be an avid fan of the Packers, Brewers, and the Bucks. He frequently shared current games, plays, and standings with his sister, Karen, and nephew, Tim.

After he retired from farming, Maurie had different jobs. A favorite one probably was his last employment at Piggly Wiggly, where he enjoyed meeting and visiting with many customers he knew.

Maurie had a passion for reminiscing past and present friendships and relationships. And, when the opportunity arose, he loved exchanging news about people. When meeting people, he usually was interested to know and understand their "roots", as Maurie would say.

In 2008, he moved from the farm to live with his mother following his hip surgery. He took regular trips out to his beloved family farm with his very recognizable old faithful '93 truck. He became close friends to his Sorg cousins, Jeff and Jeffrey, who worked the land and then later became the new owners. He was so pleased that Jeffrey and Brittany were married on the farm, and they allowed Maurie to continue regular visits. He especially enjoyed feeding apples to Sam, the horse, and cherished his time spent with Jeffrey and Brittany's children, Blakely and JR.

He was a lifelong member of the Blackhawk Bethlehem Church; and all his life, he enjoyed the fellowship there with friends.

Maurie is survived by his two sisters; Karen Ladd, and Marla Sprecher; one sister-in-law, Marilyn Sprecher; three nephews, Mike (Rick Schwandt) Sprecher, Kirk (Stephanie) Sprecher, and Tim Ladd; two great nieces, Maddie and Sydney Sprecher; one great nephew, Sam Sprecher; many cousins;  and a close friend of the family, Barb Oelke.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbert and Marcella;  brother, Wilmar Sprecher; and brother-in-law, Paul Ladd.

A funeral service will be held at Blackhawk Bethlehem Church, Cty. Rd. C, Sauk City, WI on Sat., Dec. 20, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation from 10:00-11:00 a.m. After the service, a brief ceremony with be held at the church cemetery gravesite; and then, a luncheon will follow at the church.

The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff at Sauk Prairie Healthcare, St. Mary's Hospital, Maplewood, and Agrace Hospice for all the care provided to Maurie.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Maurie's name may be made to the Blackhawk Bethlehem Church.
