Michael G. Smith, age 82, passed away at his home in Mazomanie surrounded by his family on Friday, October 16, 2015. He was born in Temuco, Chile on February 10, 1933 to Arthur and Irene (Watterson) Smith; sadly his mother passed away at his birth, and he was later raised by his step-mother Phyllis. Mike was united in marriage to Kathryn M. Pankow on June 27, 1981 in Madison, WI, by Pastor Tom Trapp. Mike was employed by the University of Wisconsin- Madison for 30 years; first with the Dept. of Agriculture, later with PhotoMedia, and lastly as a Graphic Artist with the U.W. Hospitals and Clinics, retiring in 2005. Mike has a passion for reading and researching many subjects, some of those being biblical, medieval history, WW2 history, astronomy, photography and drawing. He was never without his books! He shared his love of nature with his wife Kathryn and together enjoyed fishing, camping, hiking, rock collecting, and nature photography. His inside interests were enjoying and caring for his assortment of multiple ferrets over 34 years and his parrot Topper. Mike was very strong in his faith in the Lord and always found comfort in His word.

We are extremely grateful to Hospice and the caregivers who made his stay at home less stressful and comforting in his final days.

Mike is survived by his wife, Kathryn of Mazomanie; his sister, Marjorie Bassett of Sandbach Cheshire, England; a brother, Donald (Gloria) Smith of Temuco, Chile; his father and mother in-law, Gerald (Carol) Pankow of Waterloo, WI; other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by twin siblings.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm, on Wednesday, October 21, 2015 at St. James Lutheran Church, 415 Washington St., Prairie du Sac. A light luncheon will follow.
