Nettie Marie Gander, age 90, of Prairie du Sac passed away at the Jack and Engrid Meng Hospice Home in DePere on Tuesday, June 11, 2024. She was born in Richland Center on Feb. 24, 1934, to John and Genevieve (Tenney) Vopalensky. She graduated Richland Center High School in 1952 and attended Richland County Teachers College and later the University of Wisconsin - Platteville, obtaining her teacher's certificate. She was united in marriage to Lawrence "Larry" Gander on Aug. 4, 1956; he preceded her in death on Mar. 10, 2023. Nettie taught elementary school at North Clayton School near Soldiers Grove, and later at Tower Rock School for the Sauk Prairie School District and St. Luke's Catholic School in Plain. Nettie and Larry settled in Prairie du Sac where Nettie played organ and piano for the Presbyterian Church in Prairie du Sac for 25 years; was a member of First United Church of Christ and also the American Legion Auxiliary. She had a love of music and played the clarinet and also was a charter member of the Sauk Prairie Community Band. She enjoyed cooking and baking, painting ceramics and porcelain artwork, puzzles (fondly known as "The Puzzlemaker") and canning the bounty from Larry's garden.
She is survived by daughter, Rhonda; son, Gayle (Andrea "Andie") Gander and their son, Jacob; and sister in-law, Vivian Gander. She is further survived by other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Larry Dean Gander, her brother John Vopalensky and wife Marilyn; and in-laws, Stanley (Pat) Olson, Jerry (Pauline) Rieck and Raymond Gander.
Nettie's family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at the Cottages at Meadowlands of Oconto Falls and to Unity Hospice and the Meng Home Staff for their care of Mom.
A memorial service for Nettie will be held on Friday, June 21, 2024 at 2:30 pm, at First United Church of Christ in Sauk City; interment will follow in the Prairie du Sac Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 12:30 until the time of service.
