Paul M. Bishop (Paul Mac) was one of six sons born to Dr. Paul and Alice (Baker) Bishop. Paul Mac was born on September 10, 1953 in Haynesville, Louisiana. The Bishop family moved to Prairie du Sac in January of 1959 when Dr Bishop partnered with Dr Gibbs Zauft at the Prairie Clinic and Sauk Prairie Hospital. Paul Mac was a proud member of the Sauk-Prairie High School class of 1971, where he lettered in football, basketball, and golf. He was medalist in a golf tournament representing Sauk Prairie High. Paul Mac was an excellent student in high school, and continued his education briefly at UW-La Crosse, UW-Madison and the University of Arizona.
At age 22, Paul Mac was diagnosed with Schizophrenia, this disease derailed any further educational or vocational pursuits. However, Paul Mac became an excellent self-advocate and advocated for countless others suffering from Mental and/or Behavior health issues. Since Schizophrenia prevented him from consistent employment, he became involved with the Community Support Program through Sauk County Department of Human Services in 1988. The CSP unit works with people who have chronic and persistent mental illness. Paul Mac not only received Psychiatric and case management services through the CSP program but this enabled him to become stable enough to advocate for not only himself but others. Paul Mac thoroughly enjoyed helping others with chronic and persistent illness and was an excellent resource for people in need. Paul Mac was served on the board of directors for NAMI (National Association of Mental Illness) for several terms, was instrumental in developing a support group for people suffering from Bi-polar disorder and depression, and the drop in center in Reedsburg which provided activities and networking for people with Mental and/or Behavior Health Issues. He was also a certified Peer Counselor, able to provide advice and guidance for people with Mental Health issues. After Paul Mac's diagnoses, he dedicated his life to helping people. He was willing to help people in any way he could. He was an excellent resource to people in need. Paul Mac always had a kind heart, he was an excellent caregiver to his parents, and family and friends meant the world to him. Once he knew you, you had a friend for life. He dearly loved his five brothers; his five sisters-in law; his nieces and nephews and they in turn loved "Uncle Mac" dearly. He was kind to a fault, and very generous to his family members and friends. In 2022 Paul Mac underwent treatment for lung cancer and was susceptible to aspiration pneumonia. He passed away on May 19, 2026 at Ingleside Manor in Mt. Horeb. While at Ingleside he loved attending group activities, meeting new residents and staff, knowing them all on a first named basis. Even with his quality of life compromised, he always had a smile on his face and had positive things to say and always asked about others. Paul Mac was a person of great faith. He loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and is most certainly in a better place as Jesus Christ took Paul home.
Paul Mac is survived by: his five brothers, Neil (Kathy) of Lodi: Mark (Judy) of Mineral Point; Reb (Nancy) of Mequon; Alan (Cindy) of Avila Beach, CA; Billy (Christiane) of Merrimac. His nephews, Brad, of Sherman, TX; Brent (Tana) of Prosper, TX and Torry (Lisa) of Missoula, MT. His nieces, Carrie (Creighton) of Mineral Point; Brynn of Cedarburg; Brooke (Bernie) of DeForest; Hannah (Mike) of Menomonie; Megan (Michael) Burris of Laguna Nigel, CA; Ahna Bishop, of San Luis Obispo, CA; and Kendra (Clint) McLaren of Parker, CO. Great Nieces: Lauren, Leah, Julia, Madison, Emma, Khloe, Evelyn, Sydney, Peyton and Audrey. Great nephews: Grant, Carter, Nicholas, Weston and Stetson.
Paul Mac was preceded in death by his Parents, Dr Paul and Alice Bishop, and special family member, Ms. Elva Washington.
The family would like to thank the staff at Ingleside Manor, for their care and treatment; Agrace Hospice and the CSP program through Sauk County DHS, specifically, Allen, Scott and Stuart.
