IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard "Dick"
M. Pape
November 3, 1939 – January 15, 2024
Richard "Dick" M. Pape, age 84, passed away Monday, Jan. 15, 2024 at Sauk Prairie Hospital. He was born at home in Roxbury on Nov. 3, 1939 to the late Louis and Melania (Pulvermacher) Pape. He graduated from Sauk City High School; class of 1958. Dick was united in marriage to Judith Baier on June 26, 1962 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Sauk City.
Dick always had an interest in cars, trucks, hot rods and motorcycles. He loved working with his father and brother Art at the Pape Garage in the Town of Roxbury. He also enjoyed camping and snowmobiling and shared those passions with his family and friends. Dick had the talent to fix just about anything and seemed to always have multiple irons in the fire. He was an exceptional card player and made an occasional trip to the casino. He also loved feeding birds, and enjoyed watching them from his favorite chair with a fresh cup of coffee…and a flat toothpick.
Dick went on to work for the University of Wisconsin Primate Center as an instrument maker and fabricator where he retired in 2000 after 35 years. Dick and Judy enjoyed retirement, taking many trips to Jamaica and Arizona. They built a home near Neshkoro, but eventually moved back to Sauk City to be closer to family. Later in life he discovered spectator sports. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their various pursuits and passed the summer with Judy watching the Milwaukee Brewers.
Dick was a Charter Member of the 48's and Under Car Club and the White Lightning Snowmobile Club. His faith was important to him, he was a member of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church and was a 3rd Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus.
Dick is survived by his wife, Judith; children, Bruce (Jennifer) Pape and their children, Isaac, Adam and Emilia; Timothy (Elly) Pape and their children, Calvin (Saori) and their children, Josiah, Atticus and Oliver; Dylan, Jonica and Maxwell; daughters, Lori Pape and Christine (Gordon) Blum and their children, Jovanna (Matthew) Vander Schaaf, Caden (fiancé Adele); siblings, Ruth Scherwinski, Harold (Susan) Pape, Jeanne (Timothy) Taylor; in-laws, Joyce Steensrud, James (Denise) Baier, Rodney Blum, Gerald Alt, Wilfred Kuehn and Sally Pape. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws, Leonard "Chickie" and Alvina Baier; siblings, Mildred Kuehn, Art (Mary Jo) Pape, Verna Alt, Howard Pape; sister in-law, Jeanne Blum and brothers in-law, Fred Thompson and Ervin Scherwinski.
A visitation for Dick will be held on Monday, Jan. 22, 2024 starting at 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Hooverson Funeral Home, 251 Water St., Sauk City. A rosary will be prayed at 2:30 pm. Visitation will also be held on Tuesday, Jan. 23 from 10:00 am until 10:45 am at the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 am at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 115 Madison St., Sauk City celebrated by Fr. Miguel Galvez. Interment will be held in the St. Aloysius Cemetery.
One of Dick's favorite projects was making Horseshoe Nail Cross necklaces for friends and family. If you are one of the 356 people who received one, his family asks that you please wear it to the funeral.
Dick's family would like to express their sincerest thanks to Fr. Miguel for his visits; and to Maplewood Rehab, Sauk Prairie Hospital, Patrick from Brightstar and Dr. Vogt for their help and care of Dick.
In lieu of flowers, contributions will be sent to the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy in Dick's name.
