Roger D. Maynard

Roger D. Maynard, age 87, passed away peacefully at his home in Sauk City on July 16, 2026. He was born on June 6, 1939, to the late Howard and Agnes (Rasmussen) Maynard. Roger grew up in Madison, graduating from East High School in 1956. Following high school, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1964, achieving the rank of Sergeant. On October 24, 1981, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Eldora “Ellie” Savage.

For 36 years, from 1965 to 2001, Roger worked as a skilled butcher for Oscar Mayer in Madison. Throughout his long career, he was a dedicated UFCW Local 538 Union Member and served faithfully as a Union Representative for his coworkers.

Upon retiring, Roger fully embraced his passion for the open road and his beloved Goldwing motorcycle. Every summer, he and Ellie set out on long, multi-state road trips, creating unforgettable memories together. Roger took immense joy in meticulously planning these routes, swapping stories with fellow riders, and connecting with local Goldwing groups. An avid collector of stamps and coins, he also loved playing cards and was always eager to strike up a conversation and create new friendships along the way. He was a familiar and active face at the Wellness Center, where he looked forward to working out several times a week.

Roger and Ellie took immense pride in their growing family, finding their greatest happiness during family celebrations and treasured visits with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Roger is survived by his devoted wife, Ellie; his daughters, Teresa Maynard and Ginger Clark; his grandchildren, Roth (Sarah) Clark and their son Shepherd, Christian Clark, and Kim Kreinz; Ellie’s son, Greg; grandchildren, Nichole (Walter) Clark and their children Connor, Morgan, and Miranda; Nathen Steinhorst and his son Jack; Brennan (Kelsey) Steinhorst and their children, Eden Rose and Ava; Josh (Ana) Steinhorst and their children Jarod and Alec; and Roger’s sisters, Nancy (Gene) Hopkins and Debra (Glen) Foley. He is further survived by many extended family members and dear friends.

In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his beloved son, Randy Maynard; his stepson, Jerome Steinhorst; and his two sisters, Donna and Kathy.

Roger’s family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to their wonderful neighbors for the visits, food, prayers, and overwhelming love shown during this difficult time. They also offer their sincere thanks to St. Croix Hospice for the compassionate care provided to Roger.
