Obituary

Roger V. "R.V." Diehl, age 94, died Sun., Mar. 20, 2016 at U.W. Hospital in Madison. R.V. passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family and was alert and feisty until his last days. He was born in Texas, Nov. 15, 1921 to the late Dick and Clara (Fischer) Diehl. Roger was united in marriage to Margaret Fingerhut, she preceded him in death after decades of marriage. In his later years he enjoyed the companionship of his special friend Arlene Patterson, she preceded him in death.

Roger greatly missed his two beloved sons, Denny and Doug, who preceeded him in death.

He loved hunting, fishing, playing cards, dancing, and spending time with friends and family. When asked how he would like to be remembered his family was clearly instructed to remind everyone that he was a "great hunter and fisherman." He enjoyed numerous trips to Canada, Colorado, Wyoming, and other locations throughout his life. Roger never hesitated to inform others how their card game could be improved.

During Roger's childhood his mother Clara passed away. RV and his three siblings were moved to WI and lovingly raised and cared for by his aunt and uncle Kate and Herman Fuchs. In his 20's Roger barely survived a duck hunting boat accident that claimed the lives of three brother-in-laws and one friend.

Roger was incredibly hard-working through-out his life. He worked for 20 years as a union concrete laborer and was proud of building three of the tallest (at the time) buildings in Madison, WI. He simultaneously operated a dairy farm and farmed 369 acres in the scenic hills of the Plain, WI area. He resided at Maplewood Nursing Home in Sauk City, WI for the last 10 years of his life.

Roger is survived by a sister, Lucille; 2 grandchildren, Brent (Nancy) Diehl of CA, and Tim (Ruth Railey) Diehl of Madison; he is further survived by many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

In addition to his wife Margaret and longtime companion, Arlene; he was preceded in death by two sons, Doug and Denny.

A memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm on Wed. Mar. 23, 2016 at Hooverson Funeral Home, 251 Water St., Sauk City with Pastor William Kapp officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Roger's family would like to thank the staff at UW-Hospital for their thoughtful and compassionate care in his last days.
