Obituary

Roland (Rollie) J. Mack gained his Eternal wings as he entered his Eternal home on August 17, 2024, at the age of 89.  He was born on July 20th, 1935, in Roxbury, the son of John and Ella (Lamberty) Mack.  At the age of 19 he served his country by volunteering in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956.  After completing his service, he logged his first flight on Oct 23, 1956, and earned his Private Pilot's license in March 1957.  Rollie went on to graduate from Janesville Vocational School in July of 1958 with an FAA Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics license.  He shared these accomplishments for the next 63 years, with his wife Joan (Meinholz) Mack whom he married on June 9th, 1959, at St. Peters Catholic Church in Ashton.

Rolle built a 62-year career at C29 Morey Airport until his retirement at the age of 84, in March 2020.  During that time Rollie was a line person, aircraft mechanic, flight instructor, charter pilot and corporate pilot.  He loved meeting his passengers and providing flights that supported local businesses, news teams covering Badger athletics, and the UW Hospital Organ Transplant teams.  After 9,488 flights and nearly 22,000 hours, on August 21, 2014, Rollie landed his Cessna 340 where his first landing was 70 years earlier at the age of 9 in a neighbor's plane, C29-Morey Airport, Middleton.  But even then, Rollie's love for flying and the airport was so strong that he continued his career at Morey Airport as a mechanic.

Survivors include his children, Juanita (Bill) Wagner, Ross (Krista), and Julianne (Chad) Brickl; 13 grandchildren, Andria (Jake) Phillips, Tara (Michael) Luckey, Dawson (Breanna) and Marissa Loether, Hannah, Andrew, Allison and Isabella Mack, Phillip, Cora, Myah, Meg, and Jack Brickl; great granddaughters, Addison and Grace Phillips, Elsie Luckey; siblings Donald (Carol) Mack, Anita Clemens, Kathy (Jim) O'Day, and Phyllis (Tom) Ziegler; and sister in law Darlene Lochner; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his wife; sons Joseph (Infant) and Randal; parents; sister, Elaine Bradburn; brothers Carl Lochner, Richard and Robert Mack; and in laws Robert Bradburn, Gordon Clemens, Trula and Carole Mack.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Norbert's Catholic Church, Roxbury on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at 11:00 am with Fr. Miguel Galvez presiding. Interment will follow in the St. Norbert's Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Lachmund-Cramer VFW Post 7694.

A visitation for Rollie will be held on Monday, August 19, 2024, starting at 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Hooverson Funeral Home, 251 Water St., Sauk City. The Knights of Columbus will pray the rosary at 3:30 pm.

Dad/Grandpa-we will miss the swift "hello" with the twinkle in your eye and the smirk that warmed our hearts.  Your talents as a pilot and mechanic made us so proud to call you Dad/Grandpa.  You provided your passengers with unmatched service, saved thousands of lives through organ and tissue transplants, and taught us kids the value of commitment, dedication, selflessness and hard work. You also taught us faith, as the drive to the airport always included the rosary and a few prayers.  We will cherish our memories of the flights we shared, your German grandkid "tricks", and your love for simple things: the warmth of the summer sun, an elephant ear at the fair, tapping your feet to Lawerence Welk, and watching the sunset from the picture window at the farm.  We are sure your last flight was the best yet, and even though we can't turn on the scanner to hear your voice and call signal, when we look to the sky for the hum of plane engines, we will hear you say, "It's a great day for flying" and know that mom has her pilot of the sky. hooversonfuneralhomes.com
