Russell D. Steinhorst, age 82, died on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Maplewood of Sauk Prairie. He was born in North Freedom on July 3, 1931, the son of the late Walter and Elisbeth (Willey) Steinhorst. He was united in marriage to Shirley Anderson on April 12, 1958 in Black Hawk. Russell was a U. S. Navy veteran having served aboard the USS Randolf. He enjoyed farming, horses, dancing, spending time with his grandchildren, and enjoyed his country life.
He is survived by his children, Diane (Gary) Connor and Deb (Greg) Zurbuchen, both of Sauk Prairie; grandchildren, Shaun (friend Sam Carpenter), Steve Connor, Tom Pagel, and Will and Gillian Zurbuchen; his sisters, Eunice (Mer) Shanks and Marlene (Bert) Enstad; a brother Ron Steinhorst; friend and brother-in-law, Bill Dunse; nieces, nephews other relatives, and many friends.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; a daughter, Dorene Pagel; sisters, Delores (Russell) Higbee, Lorna (Leo) Wieglow and Audrey Doll; and a sister-in-law, Elaine Dunse.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of the Sauk Prairie Ambulance, and Maplewood Nursing Home for their care of Dad.
A memorial service will be held at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Black Hawk at 11:30 a.m on Saturday, January 11, 2014 ,with Pastor Kendall Schlittler officiating. A visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m until the time of the service. Burial, with military honors accorded by Lachmund-Cramer VFW post 7694, will follow in the church cemetery.
