Obituary

Sandra "Sandy" Phyllis Frey, age 87 of Sauk City, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, July 7, 2024, at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg, surrounded by the love of her family.

She was born August 24, 1936, to Ted and Verna (Schaefer) Diehl, the eldest of four children.  She attended the Harrisburg School, a one room schoolhouse in the township of Troy where her parents owned the Fair View Cheese Factory.  They then moved to Sauk City when her parents bought the Celo Bottling Company.  She attended Sauk City High School, graduating in 1954.

Some of Sandy's employers included: Badger Army Ammunition Plant, West Side Swistyle, Bank of Prairie du Sac, Riverside Fashions, Maplewood Nursing Home and Sauk Prairie Memorial Hospital.

Sandy's greatest joys included being a stay-at-home mom and volunteering for many years.  This included the hospital gift shop and cafeteria, St. Vincent de Paul, and 6:8.  She was actively involved in church activities and looked forward to going to her Quilting and Circle Groups along with the social events.  She was a great piano player and played by ear the majority of the time.  Reading was a favorite pastime of hers and she enjoyed visits to the library.  The taxi drivers became some of her best friends as she often chose the taxi over offers from friends and family for rides.

Later on in life she enjoyed attending the Sauk Prairie Twins baseball games, playing bingo, euchre, attending exercise class and spending as much time as she could with her family and many friends.

Survivors include her daughters: Brenda Duchrow (Greg Anderson), Lynn (Sergiy) Artemchuk, Tammy Frey (Kim Bigler); cherished grandchildren: Amber Melton, Brandon Duchrow, Nikki Duchrow (Zach Hildebrandt), Gavin (Laura) Halverson, Ty Anderson (Fawn Mosher); great grandchildren Brantley and Kane Anderson, Scottlyn Hildebrandt; sister Nancy Wipperfurth and sister-in-law Margaret Diehl, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Ronald and Stanley, grandson Austin Halverson, and brother-in-law Joseph Wipperfurth.

A funeral service for Sandy will be held at 11 am on Friday, July 19, 2024. A visitation will be held from 4-7 pm on Thursday, July 18, and also the morning of the service, one hour prior to the service.  All will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, 100 Oak St., Prairie du Sac.  A luncheon at the church will follow.

The family would like to thank the care team at Maplewood in Sauk City and Agrace Hospice.  A huge thank you to her granddaughter Nikki for all of her help in caring for Grandma Sandy the last six weeks.

Sandy will be remembered for her zest of life, sense of humor and adventurous spirit and will be greatly missed by many.

Memorials may be made to Agrace, 6:8 in Sauk City or St. Vincent de Paul in Prairie du Sac.
