Valerie Rose Flogel, 56, of Madison, WI, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 21, 2019.
She was born on April 17, 1963 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of the late Gale Holmgren and Emily Smith and the step-daughter of the late Raymond Smith. Val graduated from River Valley High School in 1981 and then married Raymond Flogel in 1985, with whom she had five children. While her kids were young she mostly worked as a stay-at-home mom while also waitressing part time at the Old Feed Mill in Mazomanie. Then in 2010 she got a full-time job as an administrative assistant at Electronic Theatre Controls in Middleton, WI, where she had been working up until the time of her death. Valerie was known for her energetic and caring personality, as well as her love of dancing. She was passionate about spending time with her friends and family, especially her children and grandchildren.
Val is survived by her five children, Amy (Brett) Polyock and their son Eli; Shannon (Luke) Shelley and their three children Eva, Landon, and Pierson, Philip and his two sons, Ellison and Lyle Robinson, Zachary, and Lucas; former spouse Raymond; her sisters, Virginia Holmgren, Vicki Goussenkova, and Veronica (Joe) Cushing;
step-siblings Terri (Chris) Hager, Robert (Cheri) Smith, and Janice (Tony) Alliano.
her mother Emily Smith; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her father, Gale Holmgren and step-father, Raymond Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2019, at Curtiss Street Bible Fellowship in Mazomanie, WI, and there will be a visitation from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 26, 2019, also at Curtiss Street Bible Fellowship. Interment will take place in Mazomanie Cemetery.
Over the course of her life, Val was a strong supporter of organizations that reached out to young women facing difficult pregnancy decisions, at one time volunteering as a counselor to such individuals. In honor of her memory, please consider making a donation to Care Net Pregnancy Center.
