Verna Diehl, age 96, passed away on Friday, July 3, 2009 at Maplewood of Sauk Prairie. She was born in Black Hawk on March 4, 1913, the daughter of the late Ervin and Emma (Repka) Schaefer. She was united in marriage to Ted Diehl in 1935. He preceded her in death in 1967. Verna enjoyed baking, bird-watching, listening to family hunting stories, and spending time with her family. She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Frey and Nancy (Joe) Wipperfurth; two sons, Stan Diehl and Ron (Margaret) Diehl; two sisters, twin sister Erna Bartnick and Lynette Diehl; two brothers, Harley Schaefer and Maurice (Cleo) Schaefer; sister-in-law, Elaine Schaefer; 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ervin and Stanley Schaefer; a sister, Laura Wartzok; and a great-grandson, Austin Halverson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. ALOYSIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH, Sauk City, at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2009. Burial will follow in St. Aloysius Cemetery. Friends may call at HOOVERSON FUNERAL HOME, Sauk City, from 5:00pm until 7:00pm on Monday, July 6, 2009. Grateful thanks to the staff at Maplewood for the special care given to Verna.
